they swung with merriment and skipped all throughout the town and
into the meadows, hand in hand, gleeful grins stuck on their wicked faces.

whilst the gods certainly still have the two lovers snagged up in their claws,
they still feel as if though they just might be free at last.

#daanliseweek day 5: stitches

you had a dream mere moments ago, whilst curled up tight in your den.
of you out on the surface in a pretty dress, holding a parasol and parading
around the streets of the city above. there was a shorter man accompanying you.
you've had this dream before.

he had a baby face and a flat expression, but he was so very warm. kind.
his hands were very soft. this delighted you.

there's a loud creak somewhere up above. you scrunch up and hiss
at the noise. chattering and footsteps coming down the stairs and
straight into your nest. you sniff through the darkness and smell art,
several morsels. four.

of all of them, he was your favorite. you knew that scent,
somewhere in the back of your rotted mind. something about him.
he was such a pretty shade of purple.

you shamble out from the shadows with a clicking noise, leaned forward,
your head still a bit loose from your spine. something about him makes
you giddy. you bubble up in laughter, he's so cute, you can't help it.

with the way he keeps staring at you,
you presume he thinks you're a looker, too.

#daanliseweek day 4: goodbye

you're beyond mortified to find that your attempt to kill yourself failed.

your eye flutters open and your arm feels gooey. it burns. itches. you have
gauze packed into your face and abdomen from where you gouged and sliced
out every useless organ you could think of. incredibly useless: they didn't work.

you decided you couldn't do this without her.
you still think that's true. but throughout your life, no matter how
many times you've gone off and tried to die, the cat always saves you somehow.
you simply aren't allowed. your death isn't written in the gods' wills.

"old sport," he purrs. "it seems that humans are still fickle, no?"

silence stretches long.

"even she, in the end."

you're spaced out and zeroed in on the floor.

"…just say the word, and i'll make this pain manageable."

you stand on your wobbly legs and begin your investigation.
you start to cry again. your cries bubble up into sobs. but you have to try.
it's so, so cruel that you have to try.

#daanliseweek day 3: war

you always had a vague sense that you were going to die young.

you have always been plagued with a sharp, sloshing pain through your
spine and limbs, extending from your fingertips all the way down to your toes,
coupled with fiery headaches and terrible vertigo.
but you've also always had extensive care, both from your father as well
as from your danny.

with your danny gone, you find yourself trying to whisper the magic he
used to hum to you, distraught to find that you can't do it anywhere near
as well as he could. what should be a pleasant ache between your legs
and a break from your hell always turns into abdominal cramping
and more nausea.

but for now, its the better of two evils.
you don't want to be around daddy right now.

you've noticed the staff dwindling over the last two months.
daddy's getting quieter. scarier. more erratic. twitchy. he's down to the last
two maids, and as soon as they too are fired, you will be completely
alone with him. you debate writing your next letter to your husband about this,
but you decide don't want to worry him.

you miss your danny dearly.

he looks to be much younger. he is spindly and frail, his eyes are always wide
and dumb and dull. what strikes you the most is how silent he is. he's more
like an animal, than a human boy. you were almost certain boys were

he's holed himself up in the cupboards again, and you can't help yourself
but poke and prod. afterall, it's excruciatingly rare to see another child.
