We demand that Mayor Zohran Mamdani fire NYPD Commissioner Tisch and use every power available to him to drive ICE out of New York City. We further demand the mayor abolish the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group (SRG) and Community Response Team (CRT), specialized units used to suppress dissent.

Statement continues: Socialist elected officials must lead this fight, not capitulate or waver in the face of political pressure or sacrifice the immigrant community for the sake of other reforms. DSA electeds must use their offices to confront institutions and use every lever under their control. They should not stand in opposition to those protesting to abolish ice but join their ranks as a leading figure, serving to mobilize working class people rather than retreat into political expediency while immigrant communities suffer the most. Our principles are not a set of aspirations to abandon when they become inconvenient; they are a mandate for action.

We demand that Mayor Zohran Mamdani fire NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and use every power available to him to drive ICE out of New York City. The Mayor’s office must end New York City’s cooperation with federal immigration enforcement to the fullest extent possible and mobilize every resource at its disposal to protect immigrant New Yorkers from detention and deportation.

We further demand the mayor abolish the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group (SRG) and Community Response Team (CRT), specialized units used to suppress dissent. A socialist administration cannot claim to stand with working class movements while maintaining police units that intimidate and repress them.

One of Groundwork's co-chairs posted this today. GW + Socialist Majority Caucus are the strongest electoralist factions in DSA and major players in a Zohran's campaign. It's belated, obviously, but it's clear a line has been crossed and GW will be demanding more.

Given today's NPC statement making direct demands of Mamdani, I have a feeling winds are changing re: electoral discipline. It's extremely necessary, especially as we promote the Workers Deserve More platform and have more candidates win on the Dem ballot line. I'm hopeful!

Hahaha I'm not expecting us to come to an agreement at all, I'm just sharing my POV. In DSA contexts consensus is rarely practicable, and in many cases I'd argue it's less democratic! If everyone agrees with each other there's either nothing interesting being decided or stuff going unsaid.

Demcent as practiced by these sects is definitely prime for abuse in the way you describe, but I've also grown to see the necessity of democratic and transparent disciplinary mechanisms to deal with wreckers (of which misogynists and rapists are some of the worst offenders)!

The structure and hierarchy only works if it's specifically constructed to enable democracy *and* everyone involved has a vested interest in cultivating a culture and practice of democracy. It's very clearly not what happens in RCA, RCP, PSL, etc.

I think organizational structure is very necessary to maintain a healthy democratic culture and I wish DSA were more willing to discipline members/chapters that clearly disobey bylaws/are wreckers, but seeing the weird controlling shit these sects do is so depressing...
