For instance, did you know that the lineshape function applies to the product of the gain saturation and the field (not the field alone)? I had no idea, but it does! This formalism is nice because it shoves all the microscopic dynamics into the lineshape (L_2) and gain recovery dynamics (L_1)

Last year I did a long theory paper on the propagation of ultrafast pulses through gain media I feel like I buried the lede a little in pursuit of generality. One of my favorite results is just "vanilla" gain saturation. The operator order matters a lot! doi.org/10.1002/lpor.202500538
