I don't exactly have a point to this thread. The recent "Bob Ross' paintings suck" discourse just reignited a decade-old ick from my memories, and so I wanted to vent a little. Remember folks, happy little accidents happen, and everyone is welcome to enjoy painting at their own pace.

Elitism is in every field, but I think it's especially harmful in art. Taking something accessible to all, to make it feel so small, so inaccessible, so joyless - that unless the end result is PERFECT - is just...terrifying. The point IS creating, and none taught that better than Bob Ross himself.

🐇sleepy✧potionmaker🔮˖Ი𐑼⋆✧COMMS OPEN @buninabottle.bsky.social · 02/06/2026

And it WILL be (and has been) parroted by these artists as they grow, without even thinking about it! Now, obviously there were those who didn't like that statement (like me), or those who just took it as "ooo a fun fact," but I still think that it shouldn't have even been said in the first place.

110

🐇sleepy✧potionmaker🔮˖Ი𐑼⋆✧COMMS OPEN @buninabottle.bsky.social · 02/06/2026

It perpetuated the feeling in art spaces that if the art isn't clinically perfect, done with industry-expected techniques, that it isn't worth looking at, learning from, or appreciation. Having seniors in the field perpetuate this notion to baby-artists without thought or nuance is irresponsible.

So when I heard that at a prestigious school...it felt very deflating. Students hearing that from their supposed respected teachers would of course be like "Oh, that makes sense," and none had the experience or thought to realize WHY that was, only that it WAS. Parroting art-snobbery ensued.

And I remember, even as a budding 17yo, how...strange? that felt to hear?? I only watched Bob Ross at my cousin's house growing up, bc my aunt liked to paint with him, but mostly she liked to listen to him talk - and I remember always watching him with awe and excitement, even if I couldn't paint.

--it was about the process, the JOY of painting. Anyone can have that joy. I was reminded of how when I went to art school, this point was utterly irrelevant. How many teachers, including painting instructors, NEVER pointed this out. They ONLY harped on the fact his paintings "sucked up close."

🐇sleepy✧potionmaker🔮˖Ი𐑼⋆✧COMMS OPEN @buninabottle.bsky.social · 02/06/2026

You know, I've been seeing some talk of Bob Ross' paintings not being "high quality art" float around again, and it reminded me of something. Many others have already pointed out that painting with him was supposed to be beginner friendly, and that it wasn't about the quality--

Like, obviously it's very beneficial to have experience/first-hand knowledge in something in order to write about the subject from a very authentic standpoint. BUT gatekeeping is the death of the creative.

I always think it's silly whenever people tell authors "You can't write about siblings if you don't have any!" and it's like- Babe, I don't have a dragon, either, yet you can bet its scaly ass I'm going to write about dragons??? Hello????
