Character Highlight: Stranger 🐯💦 [art by @paranatural.bsky.social] Stranger is a side villain from our D&D campaign that I've been in love with for a while now. He's a complicated guy who made a deal with the devil, but Casio can fix him 😺

Character Highlight: Stranger
A sweaty, scarred man with no name, known only by his alias: “Stranger”.

Stranger worked in the dark criminal underbelly of a city called Dunkledorf as an information broker—before meeting Casio, that is. He's a man who is used to getting his hands dirty, and thrives in shady, cutthroat environments. He's a gambler and a risk taker, and often finds himself in dangerous situations because of it.

Casio first met Stranger when he and his party took a trip to the material plane to visit Zarak’s hometown and gather some supplies for their Feywild adventure.

Stranger and Zarak had a history—though, Zarak couldn’t seem to recall the man’s name or any specific details about their time together when he returned to town with Casio. The two men used to run in the same gang together for many years, but while Zarak left to pursue mercenary work, Stranger stayed in the city and grew in its shadows… but not before making a grave, life-changing decision that would steal his name and damn his soul.

A Deal with the Devil
Having pushed his luck a bit too far, Stranger was at the end of his rope. He'd managed to piss off a very powerful figure in the city who had called for his capture, dead or alive.

Mortally wounded while making a desperate escape, Stranger found himself in a private library. As he bled out, something drew his attention to a book sitting upon the shelf: The Price of Power. Odd imagery of devils and the Hells began to take shape as he leafed through its pages. Eventually a voice spoke to him, offering him a tempting deal.

That voice was none other than the Greed Devil Mammon, a hellcat from the Nine Hells.

Mammon offered Stranger a contract that would save his life… in exchange for his name and mortal soul.

On death's door and desperate, Stranger agreed and signed the contract, becoming one of Mammon's puppets. From there on out, Stranger has been doing the devil's bidding—including attempting to take over the city of Dunkledorf.

Casio and Stranger

Casio and his friends thwarted Mammon’s plans to overtake the city, destroying him and driving him back to the Hells where he is now slowly, painfully reincarnating. He has sworn revenge on Casio and the party, and will stop at nothing to pursue and kill them.

During the battle with Mammon, Casio discovered a side of Stranger that made him want to help the warlock. He’d glimpsed a memory of the desperate moment where Stranger had signed his life away, and sympathized with his plight. To Casio, Mammon had taken advantage of someone who had little other choice but to surrender his mortal soul in a doomed situation, but that didn’t mean Stranger himself was irredeemable.

Casio extended a hopeful hand (and a fey trinket gift), promising that brighter days were ahead for the nameless man should he choose to stick around and trust in the fey bard’s assertions that there must be a way to break Mammon’s contract and return his soul and name before it was too late.

Stranger has followed Casio and his party back to the Feywild, keeping close by while carrying out the demands of his contract. Mammon is currently still reincarnating in the Hells, but has reformed enough to return to Stranger's side in a spirit-like form to give him commands.

While he's grown more and more reluctant to harm Casio in any way (though Mammon does have the ability to “pull” on Stranger's strings to force him to attack anyone), Stranger seems to have some intense beef with Zarak, and usually openly targets him during fights. It's unclear what the reason is, but Stranger has alluded that Zarak made a promise to him a long time ago that he's seemingly forgotten. Casio has begun to suspect that Mammon has something to do with Zarak's obliviousness.

Stranger's affection towards Casio has started to get him in trouble. He's shirked his contract’s responsibilities in order to aid Casio (or avoid harming him) one too many times, and now Mammon's taken another “cut” of what he's owed by turning him into even more of a puppet.

In this form, Mammon can take control of Stranger's mind and body, turning him into an unrecognizable beast that he can use to attack the party. Thankfully, Mammon can only keep him in this form for a brief amount of time, but his control of Stranger only grows stronger with each day that the contract remains in place.

For now, Casio is still working to find a way to return Stranger's name and soul as the tension and attraction flares between them.

In D&D, the party defeated a hag who owned a casino, so Casio started jokingly calling it his casino and renamed it the "Lucky Cat". Anyway, guess who owns and runs a casino now and is currently throwing a huge party at said casino 🐈🍀

Casio dressed up in a fancy outfit. He has a cream colored button-down shirt with a little bowtie, suspenders, and high waisted earthy-red pants with fancy heeled shoes. There are three versions of the outfit. In one image, his hair is tied back in a tiny bun, and in the other, everything is the same but the red clothes are recolored to be green. Casio was born human and became a catboy after being whisked away to the Feywild. Before he was fey touched, Casio grew up in an orphanage; however, he ran away to live on the streets after things at the orphanarium took a magically dark and dire turn.

Eventually, he was taken in by a kind elderly man named Nico. Casio had been stealing food from the old man's garden and taking shelter near his small house. Nico noticed this rather quickly, and began leaving out food and blankets and clothing on purpose for the strange little stray. A deceitful fey bargain stole all of Casio's memories of the Prince and cast him out of the Feywild entirely, leaving him confused and lost with an unexplainable emptiness in his heart. He couldn't recall how he'd gotten to the Feywild in the first place, he didn't remember much of his time there, and he didn't understand why he'd been thrown back into the material plane.

The witch, meanwhile, disguised herself as Casio and tricked the Prince into willingly giving his heart to her. Without a heart, Damh's body wandered and eventually ended up in the Gloaming Court (enemy territory of the Summer Court), where he transformed into a great and terrible creature of legend: the Beast of the Gloamwood.

Damh's heart, meanwhile, was harnessed as a source of power for the witch, and he remained separated from his body as well as his family and friends—unable to tell anyone where he was and unable to reach Casio.

Time, however, moved differently between the two realms.

For Casio, only a few years went by as he wandered the material plane once again—this time searching for answers to the emptiness that stirred in his heart while trying to find his way back to the Feywild. For Damh, ages and lifetimes passed in solitary exile, but he never stopped trying to call out to Casio and never gave up the hope that they would one day be reunited, despite the tragedy that had played out around them."

"Just as Casio had predicted, his music and connection to the Prince’s Heartbound Court had drawn the Beast closer to the camp than ever before. Without a second thought, Casio ran as fast as he could to meet the long lost body of his beloved Prince in a nearby clearing in the woods. Clade and a few of Casio's companions gave chase as well, and would play witness to the reunion.

Carrying an echo of Damh’s heart with him through their Heartbound Court, Casio attempted to bridge the gap and connect Damh and his body once more. A sudden, unexpected clashing of emotions flooded through the trio.

The Beast was believed to be an emotionless husk—a feral, wild animal lacking humanity. A creature without its heart usually loses the ability to feel emotion, but the Beast of the Gloamwood was bursting with immense anger and sorrow. Negative thoughts of betrayal and hatred and indescribable pain pierced Casio's heart like a knife. The Beast was furious. It felt left behind and abandoned by its loved ones.
