Waitwaiwait it’s #invertefest already 👀👀 a little busy so here’s a tortoise beetle (Aspidomorpha sanctaecrucis) I saw two days ago.
A beetle with a round outline. It has widely expanded transparent pronotum and elytra, giving it a spherical shape. The centre of the beetle appears to be shiny gold-plated, extending to four corners of its elytra and parts of the pronotum, making the gold parts of the beetle resemble a sea turtle. It’s resting on a monocot leaf, facing an opening of a dense jungle.

4. Cherry Magic (anime; still watching) Here’s why I started watching it: Straight guy friend sent me a reel of a girl holding the manga saying “I think you’d like this”, as a half-joke. He’s aware that I(m starting to) like BL. I looked it up. English name is “Cherry Magic”. Hey I’ve heard of it.
The anime cover for “Cherry Magic: 30 years of virginity can make you a wizard?!). Our protagonists in office attire are walking together in front of cherry blossoms while two characters are behind them.

3. School trip: joined a group I’m not close to Self explanatory title. I don’t have a lot to say about this show, a bit cliche but oh my god so cute. I couldnt stop grinning the entire time, and because I watch it at night I end up being unable to sleep from how flared up I am after each episode.

2. 月食奇譚 (Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart, stupid long name!) Also by mangaka Syundei, and a dramatic tone shift compared to previous work mentioned. This one is more in line with other works of Syundei, being more dark. Still a memorable read, despite the plot taking some time to understand.
Book cover of 月食奇譚 Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart. A boy in glasses (Hoshino) is seen holding the unconscious body of a short boy (Yamada), with a long rope surrounding their necks and hand. A noose and a lunar eclipse is seen above Hoshino’s head.

1. Go for it! Nakamura This slice of life romcom was the one which first piqued my interest and has been my recent obsession. Loved it so much I read fanfiction, bought merchandise and the first volume manga in Japan (without knowing Japanese so I manually translated each page w Google).
cover for the “Go for it! Nakamura” anime. A flustered boy with a bowl cut? in Japanese school uniform puts his right hand at the chest and his left hand clenching on his bag. Behind him is the face of the main interest with short, curly chestnut hair and big brown eyes, framed in a heart. Next to them are other characters in the show framed in a star shape.

Received a letter from the University of Hong Kong, I’ll be starting my studies as a science undergrad this September (where I’ll hopefully major in ecology soon). Here’s a katydid, which I’ve mentioned in my interview as one of the overlooked insect fauna here which I hope to understand. 👁️
A bright green bush cricket/katydid with large, leaf-like wings, covering its body besides the head and limbs. The wingtips of the insect incline upwards, making it look much like a leaf from the side. and its wings have 2 small brown patches on it.

Hello, my old friend A few weeks ago, I went looking for stick insects. While there is not a single one of those in sight, I saw a tree with 6 or so of these longan lanternflies (Pyrops candelaria), and I knew I had to get a good photo of one. #bugsky
To Up close photo of peculiar looking, cicada-like insects on a tree (only one in focus). It has wings with a black base but dense, green venation, making them essentially green. The wings have yellow spots bordered in white. This red-bodied insect has a long rostrum with white spots over its schnozz.

Perhaps even lesser known is that they come in blue. This is a specimen I got and it seems to be a much more uncommon aberration than purple individuals.

the Atlas beetle along with two other species belongs in the genus Chalcosoma, which means “bronze body”. This is a fitting name, considering they often have a bronze or metallic green sheen. But do you know they come in purple? I do, but I never expected to ever find one in the wild! #InverteFest

In the little speck that is Hong Kong lives a tarantula. Well, not a very big one. Phlogiellus is a genus of tiny tarantulas which can be found even in urban environments. Members of the genus can only be identified by dissection and this specimen appears to be P. bogadeki, described in 2016.

I found this beauty dead by the road. It is Amplypterus panopus, one of the largest sphingids in HK. As a male, it only has a wingspan of 13cm, but females can reach 17cm. As it likely lived a long life, the moth is a bit battered and lost much of its striking colours. #teammoth #inverts

Poster from the beetle shop Mushi Sha on the world’s largest beetles on a 1:1 scale 😳 As cool as it is, it’s really funny Goliathus is still crowned as the heaviest beetle based on the misinformed data of 100g. (The title probably belongs to Megasoma rex, shown at the bottom next to the weevil).
A white poster with life-size photos of the world’s largest beetles, including rhinoceros, stag, longhorn, ladybird, ground, click etc. beetles and weevils.below is a regular calendar of 2025.
