Do we really need millions of mosquitoes to get an accurate picture of community composition? Maybe not...

Started fieldwork this week. Cloudberry started flowering alreadly, which means scrambling to collect pollinators. Cloudberry herbivore Boloria freija was out and about too. Got many malaise traps up, but not all. Well there's still snow up north. #insectsofthenorth #interregaurora

Just tossa pakkasilla ostin motonetistä. Aina kun vetää päähän, pitää toistaa kyniksestä tuttu "terrorists win". Pitänee pysyä pois Vantaalaisista kouluista.

Oh no, apparently it's walrus day again.

a photo of a regular walrus, fat, reddish, and tired. Liberal amount of vignetting is added to the photo in post.

@mahtabyazdanian.bsky.social defending her thesis on "Moth abundance changes and consequent bottom-up effects on birds in boreal forests". I'm proud to have mentored such a bright new PhD.

Three people, formally dressed in black sitting in a large lecture hall: Anu Valtonen, the opponent on the left, Sami Kivelä as the custos in the middle and Mahtab Yazdanian, the candidate in the speaker booth on the right.

Repair culture success. Camera got submerged a bit. The damage appeared to be mainly in the display. Bought a new one from aliexpress. Undid 19 screws and 2 snap connectors and have a working camera again. Previous 20D had Mg-body and survived several trips to river bottom with little issues, though

Hyönteisviikonloppu kokoaa yhteen suomalaiset hyönteistutkijat ja -harrastajat jalajiekspertit. Mm. edellisvuonna maalle uutena löydetyt lajit käydään ryhmittäin läpi.

@otokkaakatemia.bsky.social on saapunut sinitaivaaseen.

Subscribed to adobe products a year ago under educator pricing to work on a nonprofit book thingy, for which I've had little time to work on. Now they had updated me to full price, so I went to cancel, which cost 180 against the alternative of 3 free months. I hate adobe. I hate the rent economy.

"Danger! You are about to cancel your subscription which will deprive us from a revenue stream. Empty your wallet now." -Adobe

Kiusa se on pienikin kiusa. Oletettu venäjän valtiollinen toimija (vitsi) tuhosi valtiolle.fi palvelun juuri kun piti hakea useita työpaikkoja viime tingassa. Tällaiset sattumukset määrävät ihmisten urapolut.

Kuva valtiolle.fi palvelun virheilmoituksesta. Pelkkää tekstiä, ei kovin jännä kuva.

#BLACKflyDAY Host seeking differences among insects in one photo. Mosquitoes rely more on sensing CO2 and other volatile molecules from the exposed skin, while blackflies are more heat-seeking, opting for the gloved part, which is hotter as sweat can't evaporate.(they might like the blue light too)

Photo of my hand during field research in the Finnish Lapland. The blue nitrile-rubber glove is has tens of blackflies (diptera: simuliidae) on it, while the exposed skin on the wrist is full of mosquitoes (diptera: culicidae). A small part of my shirt sleeve reveals it to be a fancy colourful blue silk shirt from the 80's, a perfect garment to protect oneself from the sun, heat and biting insects.

It has the same energy as this picture of the Finnish entomologist John Sahlberg and his botanist wife Wilhemiina about to depart on a joint honeymoon and research trip in their best kit.

A black and white photo from 1987 showing a couple dressed similar quite formal woolly clothes. Both are wearing trousers and long boots and carrying equipment for collecting insect and plant samples.

Raakuista. Siksi raakut ym virtavesilajit taantuvat.

Kuva Suomussalmelta, kohdasta jossa joki on ylitetty metsäkoneella. Kuvasta näkyy kuinka laaja avohakkuualue rajautuu joesta vain muutaman puun levyisellä suojavyöhykkeellä.

As a lepidopterologist, I endorse the blue pinned lepidoptera specimen logo. (impossible to tell if a moth or butterfly as antennae were omitted for simplicity) .
