Don’t get me started on all the posts about the president’s obsession with renaming things. Starve him of the attention he craves.

I’m having a hard time enjoying the embarrassment of Eric Schmitt, while other posts rightly remind me that innocent people are still dying in Ukraine and Gaza, and that we don’t punish rapists here in the U.S. (unless maybe they are non-white).

I have to find another source of exciting entertainment besides American football. There are more teams I hate than I can cheer for. I haven’t known an autumn without football since around 1970, though.

Aw, thanks! If you are in the U.S., I can probably sell, sign, and send a copy of whichever you would like.

I’m sad I missed pre-settlement times in North America when there were still Passenger Pigeons, Carolina Parakeets, and bottomland forests with huge trees for them to live in. I was robbed of that experience.

I ended up selling 18 books at the #KansasBookFestival yesterday. Considering my subject matter is not terribly popular with the masses, I’m pretty happy. Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, USA.
Me, older white man with gray hair, beard, and glasses, wearing blue flannel shirt with bright green t-shirt underneath, sitting at table with black tablecloth. On the table are copies of my books: Kaufman Field Guide to Insects; Bugwatching; Insectpedia; and Wasps. All this under a tent in a parking lot. Other people and tables in background.

Today is World Wasp Day, so here’s the newest species from our yard in Leavenworth, Kansas, USA. This is an ichneumon wasp, Charops annulipes. You might recognize the banded cocoon it emerged from, more than the wasp itself. #bugsky #WorldWaspDay #bugwatching #insects #wasps
White cocoon with black bands and spots, attached to a long silken thread. Below is the small, very slender wasp that emerged from the cocoon. Wasp is mostly black, with white “feet.”

I will have a table in the exhibit hall for #entsoc2026 in Columbus, Ohio, USA, November 8-11. Let me know if you are likely to buy one (or more) so that I know how many copies to order ahead of time. I will also happily sign books you already own. Thanks! #booksky #bugsky

An awful lot of our laws are designed to oppress black people, Indigenous people, other minorities, women…. Those are the very people we *need* in leadership positions. That is one reason to reconsider convictions as a barrier to candidacy.

CEOs are rightly held in contempt for contributing to the wealth gap and other awful conditions, but it feels like we are letting the rest of the boardroom, and the faceless majority shareholders, off the hook. How do we change that?

Me, talking about wasps to a rapt audience at The Linda Hall Library this morning in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. I can’t tell you what an emotional boost I get from being around intelligent, enthusiastic, and diverse people. It doesn’t happen frequently enough. #bugsky
Myself, an older white man at a podium, facing an audience (their backs to the camera), with a slide projected behind me, featuring images of three tiny wasps, under the header “Reasons to LOVE wasps: Diversity!” Bottom center text lists these bullet points: “Solitary, Tiny, Can’t sting you, Ecologically important, Free pest control.”

When you share your butterfly photos on iNaturalist, each one becomes a piece of information scientists can use to better understand and protect butterflies. Find a butterfly near you, take a photo (your phone camera is great), and share it on iNaturalist.
Colorful butterfly cutouts scattered across a grid-paper background. Text reads: "The easiest thing you can do to protect your local butterflies: 1) Go find butterflies near you. 2) Take photos (do your best, smartphone cameras are great, too!). 3) Share your photos on iNaturalist. September 12, 2026 — Butterfly Big Day."

This is one of the objections I have when people talk about how useful LLMs can be for literature searches or for any kind of search, really. Even beyond the biases that inevitably (and, in some cases, intentionally) show up, part of a good literature search is seeing information *in context.*
