Older Alaskan natives, who live in rural villages. Believe that when you go to the hospital, you're going to die. Because they wait so long to go, that there's nothing a doctor can do to help. I'm experiencing this now with my dad. Stage 4 pancreatic cancer along with lung cancer.

That being said, I feel such deep imposter syndrome. I try and immerse myself in helping my dad, but I feel like I'm just cosplaying at being native. Making ulus, gathering wood, lighting the maqii, this entire week of Slavii. Every moment almost feels like it's for someone else.

I told my partner that I want to come back to the village for seagull egg gathering. And fishing. And berry picking. And then moose hunting in the fall. And definitely back here for Slavii. "You just want to move there, don't you?" Why yes. Yes, I do. So much of this culture is lived experience.

My trip back to the village hasn't gone quite as planned. This was supposed to be my first time moose hunting, but with my dad's bad back, it had to be shelved. So this visit has been all family, Slavii, and learning how to make ulus.

Dad made me moose bone soup, and of course he gave me the absolute best part of it. I love most food, (bananas need to go extinct) but something about Alaskan native food just hits different.

Planning a very last minute trip back to the village, it'll end up being around $2100 round trip for just me. It's insane that it's this much for travelling in the states. It'd be cheaper to get to any other country.

Being mixed is difficult. Half of my family is white, the other half is Alaskan native. Yupik, Athabascan, Dena'ina, Aleut. It's hard when my white family only see me as native, and my native family only see me as white. I wouldn't change it for anything. But I feel like I'm always in transition.
