Yep, feels less like ‘bunts are back’ versus ‘hitting is so hard these days that it’s becoming relatively more appropriate to use great defenders who are light hitters, and weak hitters should be bunting more often than good hitters’.

So is everyone else in late October. And he was playing LF, don’t pretend the dodgers didn’t have several other guys on their bench who could’ve played LF.

Again, I’m not a hater… he is one of the greatest and clutchest postseason players ever, a 3-time champion, a funny and cool guy, and he’s clearly not done as evidenced by today.

He had negative OAA in the series, his best defensive play (Barger DP) was a 90% catch probability and even though the Clement hit should’ve been his ball, he not only wouldn’t have caught it, he nearly slammed into his own player and lost it all (on maybe the greatest catch I’ve ever seen).

He is one of the greatest postseason performers ever, but almost none of what you said is true. He started every game that series, and was 5/28 with FIFTEEN strikeouts. His only XBH was in a blowout.

Thought he was done when he had one of the worst World Series performances of all time in 2025. But dude will keep doing this until he’s 50 apparently. Next year they probably don’t even play him until September, bring him out for pinch-hit October ABs with Undertaker’s music.

I will lustily root against the dodgers and Yankees every chance I get, but the playoffs without a healthy Ohtani or Judge is really unfortunate.

It also feels purposeful because it’s the Rays, but they opened up their lead with two ground balls hit right at defenders with the infield in, that scored runs because they were hit so poorly that even a drawn-in infield couldn’t make the play. That…doesn’t seem like a repeatable skill.

Allowing only one run in an inning with your defence putting up 3 errors was pretty incredible. But he has allowed actual batted balls today, which is unusual. Most of the runs were scored on balls hit so weakly that they were better than groundouts though, so hard to measure.

Lol this was always my argument against hitters with great clutch hitting stats. Does that mean they’re just not trying their hardest in lower leverage situations? What a slacker!

I hope you’re right, but I feel like we’ve been hearing ‘look at the polling, this time will be different and simple people won’t be convinced to vote against their own interests by the dishonest billion-dollar right-wing media blitz just before an election’ for quite a few cycles now.

Which is so crazy, because he’s built like a brick shithouse. He looks like a 70s starter who would throw 22 complete games a year.

Didn’t they hire Kiermaier as an outfield consultant?

How many have ever been hit in that range? 105mph at 49 degrees seems like a really unusual combo. Never really seemed like a homer though, probably caught near the warning track.

The teams should start playing the way that is aesthetically pleasing to me but I hate any rule change that incentives them to do so!

Oh absolutely. I don’t love Schneider’s tactics, but that’s only one part of being a manager. We don’t see the other part and can’t really judge it, but there’s a lot of evidence he is great at the human side.
010
buddytheelf.bsky.social @buddytheelf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
How would you describe the Jays? My feeling has been the front office is fairly analytics-forward, but Schneider decidedly less so.

buddytheelf.bsky.social @buddytheelf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Speaking of noise…several teams pulled their starters early yesterday. Several times it worked out fine. Funny we don’t hear anyone ‘blaming analytics’ in those situations.

Yankees are more acceptable than the Dodgers this year, even though they’re both easily bottom two.

Oh man, I missed one payment (by 30 days, due to an app issue) a couple years ago after decades of 825+ scores. Score dropped like 100 points and basically stayed there, likely for several more years. Just an incredibly awful model, and yet billions of dollars are conducted based on it.

This piece is indistinguishable from something like the Sun or New York Post. Publishing something so dishonest and basic tarnishes all of The Atlantic.

Correct. Arguing about ‘the real racists’ is an old trope, but anyone equating being against Israel’s current policies to being anti-Semitic is taking several leaps in logic, and effectively being anti-Semitic themselves by grouping all Jews in with Israel’s actions.

Yep, Suárez, Gray and Crochet is not exactly shopping in the bargain bin. Maybe a team like the Red Sox should be spending more, but their biggest problem has just been poor decisions. A lot of mid-sized FAs going poorly, and going the wrong direction on Betts, Schwarber, etc.

Watching NFL and NBA this week made me appreciate baseball even more. Of the major sports, referees/umpires have by far the least ability to truly impact the game in baseball, and even more so now with challenges. It’s just so much more rare for refs/umps to have to deal with a grey area.

I’m not sure it was really just to catch Verlander, it’s not like that was reasonably possible by the mid innings. He just wanted to go out like a boss.

FYI, he is the first player to appear in 82+ games since the 3-batter rule was implemented. I wish you guys still did references to usernames or whatever if you used a stat on air from a post lol

Maybe instead of 8 SPs to start the year, we just go with an opening day roster of 13 SPs (and a few in AAA to cover for injuries obviously). Maybe then we can still have a full rotation by May 😭

I’m not sure I remember the last time bringing the infield in worked. Mayyybe bring them like halfway for an easier throw if you’re really desparate, but the game is too fast and muscle memory of fielders is too strong. Even when they get a grounder right at them it’s booted half the time.

You said on the day he was hired they were going to go on a run because they’d gotten unlucky so far and had an easy schedule coming up, and everyone was going to give him way too much credit. I’ve never forgotten that, incredible how being likeable has allowed him to fail upward as a coach.

I think you were the only person to report his earlier comments in a way that was actually honest and conveyed their meaning with context. Even some of the other journalists who normally do it well handled this one really poorly. Thanks for doing a great job of it.

You are generally a great reporter, but I was extremely disappointed with the way you wrote about his earlier comments. It read more like TMZ than actual journalism. You failed to provide context and exacerbated what was obviously a wide misunderstanding of his comments. It was beneath you.

No honourable mention for Okamoto, even though he out-WARed several of the others. Obviously honourable mentions don’t have to be comprehensive, so no complaints. But I’m curious how much (if any) you don’t an NPB veteran like him? Personally, I dislike them being eligible for rookie awards.

So many Jays fans lamenting our lack of scoring despite being top-10 in batting average. Never mind that our middle infield, combined, would rank 115 of 135 in walks. Separately they are 133 and 135th.

Also an example of just the absolute incompetence of everyone there to do anything at all. They could’ve foreseen this and set up their own audio, but even something that a high school AV club could accomplish is outside the grasp of people with unlimited money and resources.

Which is hilarious, because his entire tenure with the Jays was about making contact, putting it in play, avoiding strikeouts.

The lack of entropy potential this year is very disappointing. With the lack of it, my cheering position is for the the AL West division leader to finish under .500 (for the lolz) and/or for it to finish in a tie where the loser doesn’t make the playoffs, in hopes of getting tiebreak rules changed.

Especially not good with the Sox playing the Royals and Rockies, mostly at home. They’d have to completely fall apart to not win 4-5 of those. Incredible tbat the pitching was so good, that just one fewer injury and they might’ve carried a bottom-3 offence to the playoffs.

And yet i keep seeing it assumed that Stewart will beat Rumsfeld for ROY because he has basically double the HR and RBI, even though his overall offensive numbers are a bit worse.

That entire inning was incredible, in the worst ways. Jays refusing to hit a ball well, Tigers refusing to field ground balls. Felt like the inning was 15 minutes in when I heard the announcer say ‘well that’s the first hit of the inning’. I think I counted 7 outs including possible GIDPs.
