Today in 1742 Handel’s Messiah, performed by George Frideric, had its world premiere on Fishamble Street in Dublin. We were a city clawing its way out of disaster. The venue was Neal’s Musick Hall, newly opened in October 1741.

Tucked into the glass and steel jungle of Manhattan’s Battery Park City, just a stone’s throw from Wall Street, there’s a quiet acre of Ireland where the memory of famine stalks our soil still.

This is one of the darkest dives into the underbelly of Dublin. The sickening murder of a little boy by a Trinity student in 1841 that opened a disturbing can of worms that went all the way to the government in Dublin Castle.

Who would Jesus bomb? Arch-bishop's comments seem somewhat loaded. Can't recall where Christ recommended war even 'as a last resort'. He Said 'Bring Swords' only to ensure His OWN Sacrifice, in cancellation of all other blood-sacrifices, would be assured. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Arbour Hill Cemetery and Prison began as an outpost of empire and ended as a sanctuary of rebellion. The prison, designed by Sir Joshua Jebb and Frederick Clarendon, opened in 1848 as a military gaol, built to discipline the soldiers of the nearby Royal Barracks, now Collins Barracks.

There's a silent limestone sentinel standing guard in Phibsborough. Officially titled The Irish Volunteer Monument, this 16-foot soldier was unveiled on the 19th of February 1939, less than six months before Europe went to war.

There's something interesting underneath the Mater Hospital. A hidden metro station, known as a station box, lies dormant beneath the forecourt of the Mater Adult Hospital, close to the Whitty Building, the A&E and outpatient services site.

There’s an abandoned theatre buried in the basement of Busáras station. The Eblana Theatre once seated 240 people. It takes its name from one of the ancient settlements that gave birth to Dublin, first cited by Ptolemy in 140 AD.

In the 18th century, a "freak of nature" from Dublin called Thomas Eclin became the toast of cultured London society for all the wrong reasons...he ate live dogs and cats! In fact, he was insatiably addicted to eating mountains of raw meat.

We once had a sexy one-eyed Viking king called Sitric Cáech (Sigtryggr Cáech in the old tongue) His nickname, "Cáech," meant "the Squinty". He came from the feared Uí Ímair dynasty. Sitric was a grandson of Ímar, possibly the very Ivar the Boneless of the Norse saga fame.

Ireland was home to dinosaurs! The remains of Megalosaurus and Scelidosaurus have been found here (so far). Our island currently has a weird gap in the discoveries we should be finding from the Mesozoic era, as much of our bedrock eroded away or was swamped beneath shallow seas.

Its illegal in France for supermarkets to throw away edible food. They have to donate unsold goods to charities. Why cant we have that here when our disasterous government means a "wealthy" country like Ireland still has roughly 9% of the population affected by food poverty?

Did you know the terrorists in Die Hard were Irish! At least in Germany they were. In the late-1980s German dub, John McClane wasn’t facing West German radicals, he was tangling with ex-members of the IRA. Hans Gruber became Jack Gruber.

Did you know the Irish fought in two of the greatest battles of the Hundred Years’ War. The Battle of Agincourt and the Battle of Castillon. When Henry V sailed for France in 1415, he was the king of English and Ireland, though his power was tenous beyond the Pale. He brought Irish warriors with him

Christie Moore was born on the 7th of May 1945 in Newbridge, County Kildare. His mother, Nancy, sang traditional ballads. When he left school he took a job in a bank. A future musical rebel behind a counter counting other people’s money might sound funny and it wouldnt last long.

Grab your Old Spice and Brylcreem and get ready to dance around your handbag on the sticky floors. We are off to visit some Dublin nightclubs of the 1970s to the 1990s. In the 70s, nightlife operated under the conceit that booze could not be served late without a substantial meal.
