Scarlet and smoke! This smoky black silhouette is part of a large cloud of partially ionised hydrogen known as Gum 15. The dark chunks of sky have seemingly few stars because lanes of dusty material are obscuring the bright regions beyond. More: www.eso.org/public/images/potw1444a 🔭 📷 ESO

Another image not previously shared from our old telescope: The Wizard Nebula, taken and processed in 2020 by Ellen Pariser, post-processed this year to bring out more background.
The Wizard Nebula appears as a red cloud mostly in the center and left of the image. Many stars of colors red, orange, yellow, white, and blue are scattered across the entire image.

The Ghost of a Dying Star 👻 ESO 378-1 is a planetary nebula with a diameter of almost four light-years. Like all planetary nebulae, it is created by the ejected and expanding gas of dying stars.  Read more: www.eso.org/public/news/eso1532 🔭 📷 ESO

As we get our new scope ready, we'd like to celebrate the old one. Here's the Orion Nebula, taken on 11/11/2017 with it. Hundreds of 5-sec pics were taken and stacked for 39 min of exposure in LRGB filters, overlaid by Ellen Pariser. Today, I tweaked it to bring out more of the background.
The Orion Nebula: A star-forming nebula containing four extremely bright stars at the center which light up the gas and dust around it to form a wing-like shape, with reds and purples dominating the edges in color.

Our upgraded research telescope is now operational! Our first light image is of globular cluster Messier 13. This is a simple, unguided, 60-second image through our luminance filter. The scope needs collimation - that's why the stars have little tails. We'll handle that this week.
Our new 16-inch Optimized Dall-Kirkham telescope from Orion Optics UK with SBIG STXL-6303 camera and accessories attached. The dome is open with a beautiful blue sky, clouds, and sunlight."First Light" - what astronomers call the first image taken through a new telescope system. This one is globular cluster M13, a ball of a hundred thousand stars centered against the dark background of space.

The Bubble Nebula, imaged at the BSU Observatory, 8/3/2016 in luminance, R, V, and B filters. ~50 minutes exposure.. Credit: BEAR Team. This nebula is ~9,000 light-years away. Wind from hot, high-mass blows bubbles in space. Hydrogen glows red here due to high-energy light from the star.
The Bubble Nebula, imaged at the Bridgewater State University Observatory, August 3, 2016. A bubble-like structure can be seen embedded in gas glowing red and pink in the region, along with a few very bright stars. Other stars surround the area.

We spotted some of that Moon joy! 🌙 In the early morning of 9 April, our NTT Telescope turned its gaze to the sky above La Silla and caught something special. Not a distant galaxy, nor a star cluster, but a streak of light with a very special story 👇 1/3
