Working on solid Earth dynamics at GFZ Potsdam. Worried about too much CO2 in the atmosphere. Born at 316 ppm (seasonal minimum). Here private; opinions my own!

How can you use mantle plumes as a reference frame for plate motions, although they rise from a convecting lower mantle? This is a topic I studied during much of my scientific life and which I discuss with Oliver Strimpel @geologybites.bsky.social: www.geologybites.com/bernhard-ste...

En route to the recovery cruise aiming at imaging materials that flowed northward from the Hawaii plume, passing the region with the highest mountains in Greenland. Here doi.org/10.1111/ter.... we proposed that these were uplifted due to materials flowing northward from the Iceland plume ...

Ronghua Cui's paper on modeling geoid and dynamic topography from tomography‐based thermo‐chemical mantle convection lnkd.in/dWZFtG3v has been published! Ronghua was here for a one-year visiting postdoc Nov 2023 - Nov 2024. Our main takeaways: (cont.)

I am very glad to share that I first-authored the very first paper published in the new diamond-open access (meaning it is free to publish AND free to read) journal Geodynamica. This paper lnkd.in/eyPAdx2X actually grew out of a high school student internship. (continued)

What happens if subducted slabs interact with hot material at the base of the upper mantle? In Yingying Li's first paper doi.org/10.1029/2025... we show how this can lead to (secondary) upper mantle plumes. With @sasbrune.bsky.social, Eline Le Breton, Anne Glerum and @michapons.bsky.social.

Koko Seamount (Emperor Chain) on 5-6 km deep ocean floor supposedly reaches up to -26 m! Last night Hakuhomaru passed there. In 2001 on Joides Resolution we drilled basalts to document Hawaii hotspot motion www.science.org/doi/10.1126/.... Amazing I would come to this remote place twice in my life!

A cloudy day on Hess Rise. In 2019 we wrote doi.org/10.1029/2019... on the origin of Hess Rise, I can't believe now I'm actually here, on board of Hakuhomaru. But we actually want to look in the mantle beneath, for vestiges of material emplaced by the Hawaiian Plume during Emperor Chain formation

3rd paper from @poulamiroy.bsky.social's Ph.D. just out at doi.org/10.1029/2025.... Combined global models of mantle flow and anisotropy constrain deformation mechanisms and viscosity, density and hence compositional structure of lowermost mantle. With Manuele Faccenda, @michapons.bsky.social & me.

My first boat trip this year - to Pfaueninsel. The next one will probably be slightly longer - a research cruise from Honolulu to Tokyo. Stay tuned for more details!

Wondering what is the anisotropic signature of slab-induced plumes from thermochemical piles in the lowermost mantle? Then find out from Poulami Roy's paper agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/... co-authored by Manuele Faccenda, @michapons.bsky.social and myself

Scientific recycling: In doi.org/10.1029/2024... I use results from Poulami Roy's Ph.D. thesis to address why plume excess temperatures are much less than temperature drop across the lowermost-mantle thermal boundary layer. Further co-authors @michapons.bsky.social and Matteo Jopke. (continued)

The democratic choices on one lamp post - who should I choose on Sunday? Note that here in Potsdam we can directly vote for Scholz - not as chancellor, though, but as MP.

How is stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet related to viscosity of the mantle beneath, and what does the fact that the deepest geoid low on Earth is in this region tell us about the mantle beneath and its viscosity? Find out from our latest paper! tektonika.online/index.php/ho...
