Not only do robot cars like Waymo not take cars off the road (they just change ownership of the cars that are on the road), but they park like the most obnoxious person you know. #Waymo #selfDriving #badParking #cars #carBrain #transit
A Waymo robot car is parked incorrectly, using two spaces instead of one despite each parking space being very large

We need to build a grade separated electrified high speed rail system that connects every MSA & CSA in the US. This will connect over 80% of people in the US. The grade separation will prevent collisions and help restore animal migration pathways. Electrification will reduce transport emissions.

I see street sweepers cleaning roads and streets on a regular basis, yet bike lanes and sidewalks remain full of branches, broken glass, trash, road signs (for vehicles), and other debris. It highlights who and what city governments actually care about, regardless of Vision Zero pronouncements.

The men's loneliness epidemic is due to capitalism closing third places, not men being unable to form relationships, and I will fight anyone who claims otherwise.

People hate the idea of #MedicareForAll because they say they don't want the gov't to restrict who they can see for a doctor but somehow are fine with a private company doing the same w/ in-network vs out-of-network (as well as the company refusing to pay for treatment because it would hurt profits)

It's unpopular to say, but your local fire dept is part of the reason for so many traffic fatalities in our cities/towns. They buy the largest trucks they can afford (rather than what is needed), and this forces roads/stroads to remain wider than needed, making drivers drive faster. #urbandesign

Why doesn't the government ban power supplies that plug directly into an outlet in favor of separating the power supply from the cord that actually plugs into the outlet? I have to use an extender to avoid blocking other outlets anyway, so just save a step, avoid potential fires, & be done with it.

How about, instead of increasingly weird Jurassic Park films that are more and more lackluster, some studio does what fans have been craving and gives us a 12 hour miniseries that closely follows the events of the book and remains true to the characters?

I don't care if a pedestrian is looking at their phone when crossing a road. It is up to drivers to be watchful for people stepping out. What if it is a blind person stepping out? What if it is a child running after a ball? City streets should be limited to 20 mph & designed accordingly.

It's crazy how cities can deploy cameras that can detect pedestrians and cyclists for surveillance reasons, yet for some reason cannot deploy cameras to detect them at intersections so they can reliably get a light to cross the intersection #urbanDesign #transit #traffic

Missing the stop line and stopping at or in the crosswalk should be a ticketable offense equivalent to a red light ticket. I'm sick of having to brace for impact while crossing the street because drivers think that the extra 3 ft at the red light will somehow save them an hour on their commute.

The best way to protect against airline monopolies causing travel price surges is for the US to build a high speed rail interstate system, similar to the highway system, that joins to every census designated MSA and CSA, which would cover around 85% of the population

Cities that don't build out public transit to give safe, efficient, & affordable options to drinking & driving outside of ad campaigns saying "Don't drink & drive" + increased police presence are just like proponents of abstinence-only sex ed + shaming teen pregnancy #transit #alcohol #puritanism

The loneliness epidemic is due to 70+ years of car-centric design, which tore apart urban cores & eliminated third places where connections with others would naturally occur & replaced them with siloed lives where going beyond work/home is a frustrating experience that requires intentionality & grit

Drivers when someone has to walk in the road & then crosses an intersection when it is safe instead of waiting on signal: Jaywalking laws are stupid & the city needs to build a sidewalk. Drivers when a cyclist does the same thing: YOU NEED TO FOLLOW THE LAW! THIS IS WHY WE DON'T BUILD BIKE LANES!

There are a lot of people angry about Toyota, etc making their cars subscription based. Rather than paying $700/month on the car (payment, insurance, maintenance, subscriptions), maybe they should demand efficient multi-modal public transit in their city & get an $80 monthly transit pass instead

Bryan S @brysko.bsky.social · 07/10/2025
I use an e-bike or public transportation for 95% of my trips, but sometimes I do have to drive. Despite drivers complaining about cyclists breaking the law, nothing seems to piss them off more than when I stick to the speed limit and come to a complete stop when turning right on red.

Vision Zero will not happen until we prioritize forms of transit that aren't private vehicles, including and especially grade separated electrified rail, and build protected bike lanes and sidewalks throughout our cities

Bryan S @brysko.bsky.social · 07/09/2025
Had to yell "Hey!" at a vehicle whose driver was drifting into the bike lane I had been occupying. The lane they were in is 12 ft wide, but they apparently felt entitled to the 5 ft of the bike lane as well. Paint is not infrastructure. Bike lanes need bollards and concrete for safety.

The city keeps building roads, but where are the cars on the ones already built? Why build roads if cars aren't going to use them? We could widen the sidewalks and bike lanes if we didn't have to cater to these drivers (who break traffic laws constantly) #whereAreTheCars #treatingCarsLikeBikes

It is unjust & unfair that pedestrians/cyclists who are not polluting have to breathe in noxious exhaust from vehicles and suffer the health consequences while the drivers whose vehicles expel those same gases have cabin filters in their vehicles to protect themselves from their own pollution.

What if, instead of Tampa/Hillsborough County (inevitably) spending $1B on a new Rays stadium, St Pete/Pinellas spent $50M on repairing Tropicana Stadium, & Hillsborough + Pinellas Counties spent $1B on a grade-separated electrified rail from downtown Tampa to downtown St Pete?

If the interstate highway system can cost $600B & take 40 years to build, with people who don't drive still having their tax dollars used to support and expand it, I don't want to hear a single driver complain about a potential statewide or nationwide HSR network taking too long or costing too much
000
Bryan S @brysko.bsky.social · 02/07/2025
Building a grade-separated rail network in the Tampa Bay region would let me sell my (paid off) car, & even a $100 monthly rail pass would be $70 cheaper than my insurance alone, not to mention gas, maintenance, parking, etc. It's July, & I've only driven 1k miles. It's a waste of money for me.

Dale Mabry Hwy would not be nearly the mess it turns into every time there is a sporting/concert event in the Raymond James/HCC area if #Tampa would build an electrified grade-separated #rail line connecting TPA, Int'l Plaza, RJ Stadium/HCC, Midtown, Downtown, and Ybor City.

Pretty sure it is cheaper & easier to clean up this planet than it is to establish a private space company, fly to a different planet, figure out how to quickly terraform a dead planet, figure out how to create a permanent atmosphere on a dead planet, establish cities, & fly people to said planet.

#Running races should agree on a standard size of #quilt square and offer that instead of (or in addition to, for a price) race #T-shirts. A lot of runners already turn their T-shirts into quilts, so why not just create a nicely designed one that can easily be added into a quilt?

Tampa (and Hillsborough county) needs to limit its traffic lights to 30 seconds per direction. Some of these lights go on for 2+ minutes for major roads, and as a pedestrian/cyclist waiting to cross, unprotected in the 90° sun, it sucks to arrive at your destination needing to towel off the sweat.

Why can't streaming remotes (Roku/Shield/etc) simply leave the dedicated app buttons blank & let us decide which app we want it to open? The giant Netflix button is taking up space that I could link to an app I do use, or I accidentally hit it & it opens up an app that I don't want.

It's a lot easier to convince people to give up parking minimums in order to encourage higher density growth if a city's public transit system is fast, efficient, & widespread. Tampa needs a grade-separated rail network if we are going to be able to handle the rapid growth we are experiencing.

Governments are SUPPOSED to fund the things that are necessary, but not profitable. Who cares if a high speed rail network isn't profitable? It's still necessary. I pay my taxes just like car enthusiasts. We fund highways, which, by themselves, are not profitable. Why not HSR?

Franklin St in #Tampa should be #car-free from Brorein St to Palm Ave. There are 2 major roads on either side for cars. Can pedestrians & cyclists have just one street in the city for human-scale movement? Businesses could even use the sidewalks for more seating & outdoor markets

Hot take: If you do not live in the Boston area & you run the #BostonMarathon more than 2-3 times, I'm not impressed by you, but rather disgusted. You've done it & now your inflated ego is preventing someone else from doing it just so you can say you've done it 5+ times. Let someone else have a go.

People say that in order for intercity HSR to succeed over cars, mass transit has to already be in place in both the start and end cities, but somehow, these same people are able to function without their personally owned vehicles when they travel across the country by plane.

Think of how many species were taken from us from previous generations: Dodos, Woolly Mammoths, Saber Toothed Tigers, etc. We are doing the same to future generations. We need public transport, higher density cities, zoning updates, clean renewable power, & a reduction in consumption.

We can hold billionaires and corporations accountable while still making changes to personal lifestyles such as biking, reducing excessive consumption, and adopting a plant based diet in order to fight climate change. Only doing one or the other will not have the effect we need.

A single "Buy Nothing Day" isn't going to accomplish a single thing. It's slacktivism. Companies measure by quarters, not days or weeks. If people actually want to effect change, they need to stop buying non-essential items for a quarter, or better yet, a year or more.

I'm tired of seeing Dems posting their outrage on IG while western civ falls. Put a bill in the hopper, or cosponsor said bill, or be prepared to get primaried next election cycle. Enough is enough with these inactive legislators that just collect a paycheck and campaign on being the lesser evil.

This highlights why rail is often better than buses as the backbone of public transit, as bus routes can be easily ended with a pen, while rail would need to be torn out at great expense. Public transit absolutely needs a certain amount of sunk costs in order to survive hostile administrations.

The fact that people are going to RedNote for "activism" instead of using open protocol apps like BlueSky or Mastodon in combination with Android phones (which has F-Droid) makes me think that using RedNote is more about the addiction to short form video rather than actual activism. Am I just jaded?
