20 years or so ago I was working as a tech for a small theater in Flint and Joe came to town and needed some kind of equipment thing and he asked me if I could give him a ride to the nearest guitar shop. We had a fun time talking about music and he gave me signed copies of all of his albums.

I saw RESIDENT EVIL last night and it’s as great as everyone says it is. Aside from the humor and the fun gore, this movie is almost perfectly constructed. A character needs to accomplish something and the obstacles just keep getting worse and worse. Absolutely nothing comes easy for this guy.

The more I read, the more I realize I’m woefully lacking in many foundational non-fiction works important to being an educated citizen. What are some books you all think are important reads that you love or have been meaning to read?

I’ve lost both of my original adult pets as well as one of the second generation pets, which I said time after time was going to be the end of it and I was done with pets. Now I have four pets. 🤷‍♂️

I’m still ecstatic. I’m so grateful to everyone for protecting that time and indulging me. This exceeded even the romanticized vision in my head, which is rare. Now I go back to the real world where no one indulges me in anything and square and round pepperoni pizza are considered the same thing.

I scored the coveted Pony Boy seat in the front row of the Outsiders musical last night and it was fantastic. I had an amazing teacher who taught it at the private evangelical school I went to (before she was fired for it) so the book means a lot to me and the musical exceeded my expectation.

Spenser turned 18 over the weekend and he’s grown into such a sweet and curious giant that this world is too good for. Luckily he has two sisters made of thunder and lightning to protect him. He loves snakes and lizards, so we went to a reptile rescue to celebrate.

They really are. Their personalities are really taking form too. We figured they were either going to send our senior cat to an early grave or force him into a nurturing elder role, and it looks like he‘s grudgingly accepted the elder role. Thank you again for bringing them into our lives.

I am genuinely baffled when I see authors online using AI-generated pictures to promote their work. That shit is crammed down our throat enough by industries we loath the last thing we need is to have it coming from industries and creators we love.

I needed a new murder show too watch between new episodes of REACHER and nothing clicked with me until I started FURIOUS on Hulu. Holy shit is this show fantastic. It’s somehow manages a perfect balance of dark and emotional and funny and terrifying. the cast is phenomenal from top to bottom.

Same. The further I get from what I think is my core talent, the more $ I make. I stayed in admin work for 10+ yrs because it paid much better than entry level writing work. Now I'm on the verge of another career jump that's the furthest I've been from my writer identity and the money is 2x+ better.

The people who think prompts are a special talent are the same people who think the idea is the most important part of a book. I’m guessing they’re also the same people who use gasoline on a campfire assuming the first spark is the most important thing instead of a solid wood and kindling structure.

At a certain point though you just have to pick up the phone and start calling. Call police stations and city halls and schools and libraries and current local newspapers and VFW Halls and anywhere else you can think of. Eventually you‘ll hit someone who loves to talk and you just start listening.

So for the police stuff. Start federal because there are a ton of federal law enforcement records available to access online. Then move to state level. A lot of state police agencies have librarians or similar to handle stuff like this. Then dig into library databases which are gold mines of info.

Bryon Quertermous @bryonquertermous.com · 17/08/2026
You need to start at the top with a wide net and get as much info you can get so you can figure out what specific pieces of info you need next from police or newspapers. It very hard to get access to “police records” or “newspaper stuff” but the more specific you can be the better luck you‘ll have.

First, talk to someone like @jqwritesstuff.bsky.social because reporters are savants at getting access to old information and second, start with a reference librarian at one of the universities nearby. You’re lucky you live near some premiere libraries and universities. They‘ll get you started.

I recently started carrying a sling bag with me everywhere because I hate not having things I need when I’m out. One of the first things I added was a folding portable keyboard I can use with my iPad or my phone. It really makes it hard to convince myself I don’t have time to get writing done.

I, possibly irrationally, hate those homeowners turning into their parents commercials because a lot of what he dings them for, including stuff like this, is actually just good community participation. I know they’re supposed to be funny and not serious, but they really rile me up.

I’m curious how you use your tablet for that. Just reading the document or were you writing/editing on it? I love my iPad and love writing on the go with it. I’m still trying to find ways to utilize the pen which seems like it should be amazing but hasn’t found a place on my process yet.

A billion dollars is the socio-economic equivalent of a loose nuke, and we should work with the same urgency and ruthlessness to prevent the acquisition of the former as we do the latter.
