Here's a blog post I've written on watching the AFL grand final with my nine-year-old son, a passionate Fremantle fan. It was equal parts exhilarating and gut-wrenching - and as a lifelong Carlton fan, I had forgotten what it was like to have such hope. www.brydoncoverdale.com/blog/docker-...

As a lifelong Carlton fan, I had forgotten what it felt like to be so invested in a grand final. Watching the game with my nine-year-old son, a passionate Fremantle fan, brought it all back.

Can anyone explain why JM Coetzee's 'Disgrace' is a contender for ABC Radio National's favourite Australian books? It's one of my favourite novels - but it is in no way Australian. It is set in South Africa and written by a South African author who some years later happened to move to Australia.

The AFL's new Wildcard Round reminded me of the bonkers trivia fact that in 1916 Fitzroy won the wooden spoon and the premiership in the same year. Only four teams played due to WWI so even though Fitzroy finished on the bottom they still made the finals, then won the grand final.

When I was a kid in Camperdown, we didn't get Melbourne Cup day as a public holiday, we had Warrnambool Cup day off instead. And on Melbourne Cup day the school held its own 'Cup' in which the Grade 6s piggy-backed the preps around the oval. I rode Brett Unwin to victory in 1987.

Since Pat Cummins became captain, Australia have played 11 Test series and have lost only one of them, in India. They've won and retained the Ashes, regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, won a World Test Championship, and qualified for the next WTC final. Oh and won a World Cup. What a record.

Australia's batters collectively average 28.40 so far in 2024, their second worst in 40 years. So, why the 5-2 winning record this year? Because the bowlers collectively average 23.51, their third best average in 65 years. Fair to say one department is carrying the other.
