Some states didn't increase state funding to make up for this federal funding cut, which could lead to staff shortages, backlogs & low-income families waiting months for help. Other states & counties are weighing property tax increases or cuts to other services to fill the gap.

SNAP update: Another cut from the Republican reconciliation law takes effect today, cutting the federal match for SNAP administrative costs from 50% to 25%. Every state now gets half as many federal dollars to ensure SNAP gets to eligible families on time & in the right amount.

And at risk of wading into the discourse, the Post's main objection is that there are far more NYPD cops than DHS social service workers. When Kennedy first started, the HHS Office of the Inspector General staffed up to prepare to protect him, but shortly after he opted for protection by the U.S. Marshals Service, people familiar with the matter said. A handful of cabinet-level figures in past decades have received a security detail from the marshals, a division of the Justice Department.

Previous HHS secretaries were protected by agents in the HHS inspector general’s office, and their security cost roughly $5 million a year, according to people familiar with the matter.

Between October 2024 & March 2026, Arizona denied more than half of the households applying or recertifying for SNAP for failing to complete the required interview. But it wasn't for lack of trying: during that period, more than 3 million calls to the state's overwhelmed call center were dropped.
