Sticking to my strategy of always (not never) reading the comments below my work, just in case it gives me a laugh, and today it has paid off
A screenshot of a comment below an article I wrote for the Telegraph interviewing the son of a baronet which reads:

'While the house is attractive it is disappointing nonetheless to see Eleanor scrapping [sic] the barrel as it were by profiling a Baronet.

There are still around 800 hereditary peers in our land (counting the second divison from Ireland) and I would have thought that there would have been enough material there amongst their lordships for Eleanor to write about.

Come on Eleanor – let's get back to the real aristocracy!'

This is from their own website. It is usually fairly obvious where people who have had estates since the 11th century got their land from! It's not for me to judge whether that's right or wrong

Apropros recent events, I was minded to look up Peter Carter-Ruck and this (new to me) detail about his relationship with Private Eye does not disappoint. I knew the F/Ruck bit but not that there was a coda
Extract from Peter Carter-Ruck's Telegraph obituary:
In 1989 Carter-Ruck publicly attacked the £600,000 damages awarded to Sonia Sutcliffe against the magazine and was invited to an Eye lunch, an occasion he attended with some trepidation. Not long afterwards, he asked if, in the new spirit of friendship, they would now stop printing the first letter of Ruck as an F. Their response, not unpredictably, was to print the first letter of Carter as an F as well. "I think my relationship with Private Eve is now definitely hate," he said later.

People say that stuff is iconic and it almost never is but perhaps the Crooked House in Lavenham actually is. A very civilised Monday morning indeed

That is very odd. I just checked DBP to see if the paper had somehow got the date wrong but no, she was indeed born in 2012

Huh, so David Ross has a peerage at last I see. He's changed his tune. This here from my 2021 interview with him where he was brusque, if not rude – and his PR told me not to mention the fact that we were meeting behind a big black door with '10' on the front www.telegraph.co.uk/art/artists/...
"There is an EdStone in my garden." The original? "You'd have to go and look at it," he says. Where does the motivation for political donation come from? "Political donations are not philanthropic in [the same] sense." There is a pause while he taps a paperclip on the table. Would he like a peerage? "No."

Bit of a jumpscare – is that the word? – seeing the name 'Vance' appear in this particular book chapter
The text reads: 'Illusions and Delusions about Hitler'

Somehow this feels like appropriate reading today (though we are considerably lacking in anyone comparably intellectual, even if they were wrong)

Huh, Google, fancy thinking a Lib Dem MP elected in 2024 is more 'prominent' than the actual painter of the same name. Dire cultural times

Found a pile of unused blueys, presumably deriving from my dad’s last tour of the Middle East. Would they still work? Have I time travelled to early 2000s postage rates?

The cover of my book Heirs and Graces, a history of the modern British aristocracy, featuring Donough O'Brien, 16th Baron Inchiquin sitting in a chair looking like a baller in front of Dromoland Castle, County Clare, with two dogs and a knobbly stick.

An extract from this interview with the writer and landowner Lord Egremont in which his mother Pamela was admiring the lake at Petworth alongside her husband's uncle Charles, 3rd Lord Leconfield:

'One day, when Lord Egremont's mother Pamela was admiring Petworth's lake, he said: "One day your husband will inherit from me not only all this, but also... half Derwentwater, the whole of Bassenthwaite Lake and the whole of Wastwaster... what you see there is not a lake. It is a pond."'

Actually it is very good and has this excellent list of excuses for delaying correspondence in it
A passage from Arthur Hearnden’ biography of Robert Birley

DO NOT GET WORRIED if no postcard arrives. The chances of my being dead or hurt in that case are so small as to be negligible. Here are a few reasons why a postcard might not come.
1. I might forget.
2. I might be too tired.
3. I might have no stamps.
4. I might have no postcard.
5. I might miss the post.
6. I might be staying at a place where there would be only one post a day and so be late.
7. It might be delayed anywhere.
8. In particular it might be delayed at Bournemouth.
You see therefore that there is no cause for alarm!

How funny that a book about the aristocracy should have in it… loads of information about the aristocracy!! V sorry Guardian! (This is actually a very nice review despite the page furniture – and given the paper’s natural disinclination towards the subject, so I am not complaining, just amused)

Not being an expert on the Soviet Union or the KGB I never thought I’d get a Le Carre-esque headline but here’s one in today’s paper for this interview with Lord Oxford, the man who got Gordievsky out, and honestly I’m just delighted. What a dude. It’s a great piece, you should read it
