There is evidence about the consequences of weak NCD health services in humanitarian settings: late complications of diabetes, poorly monitored blood pressure, interrupted dialysis, and patients with asthma without medication. Yet, they're not prioritized enough. saludeverywhere.com/en/health-in...

The humanitarian system has faced, for too long, a false dichotomy: saving lives vs. alleviating suffering. There is still a long road ahead to integrate palliative care into humanitarian assistance and into efforts to make health systems more resilient. saludeverywhere.com/en/health-in...

The humanitarian system may struggle with a lack of funding and its internal incoherence and mistakes, but humanitarianism must always prevail, above all.

Humanitarianism is not an industry, a system, its funding, or the way it's structured and coordinated. It's about standing with the people and communities affected by emergencies and crises, working together with them to alleviate suffering and defend the dignity and rights of those who need it most

In 2010, three consecutive humanitarian crises tested the capacity of the humanitarian system. This prompted IASC to launch the Transformative Agenda. It brought about changes in coordination and leadership, but widened power imbalance between humanitarian actors. saludeverywhere.com/en/humanitar...

In 2004, the humanitarian response to the Indian Ocean tsunami received 13.5 billion dollars. That same year, in Darfur, the appeal for Sudan was only 60% funded and the response took more than a year to scale up.

The Occupied Palestinian Territories alone: 53% of all aid worker killings in 2025, and 60% of attacks by host states (2023–25). This violence also targets health care, and shrinks humanitarian space. Full analysis, free & open-access: saludeverywhere.com/en/humanitar...

Attacks on aid workers and health care
Humanitarian space is under increasing threat: attacks, politicization, sanctions and bureaucracy limit access to the most vulnerable.

Bruno Abarca @brunoabarca.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
In 2025, a dangerous trend was confirmed: as humanitarian funding falls, attacks on aid workers keep rising. 700+ security incidents. 1,200+ people affected, most of them national staff. And the perpetrators are increasingly states themselves.
Salud Everywhere line chart showing the percentage change since 2016 in the number of aid workers affected by major attacks and in global humanitarian funding, based on the Aid Worker Security Database and OCHA's Financial Tracking Service. Both rise together until around 2022, then diverge sharply: attacks climb above 280% by 2025 while funding falls back to roughly 20% above its 2016 level.
