The two approaches are not mutually exclusive it seems 🤣

I love this stuff - all the methods. I write to myself in a chatty way, either by hand or on a word doc, discussing (with myself!) what the problems are and what the solutions could be...yeah, nit sure I should be admitting this 🤣 #ukteenchat

It's like - what a great sweater! Now if you could just unpick the middle, add in some stripes, change the cuffs, and make it a size or two smaller? Weirdly, I still prefer it to the first draft! #ukteenchat

This is a bit different to the times prize. I was asked if I'd like to chat about aging up the MC so it involved more discussion and going back to the drawing board - but couldn't quite believe it when my revision hit the mark. I got the email when I was in Italy and had spent day in Rome!

There’s definitely luck in publishing, so do what you can to meet it halfway–join a crit group, take courses, enter comps, read lots, try writing for different age groups. Livia actually started as a middle grade but I was able to revise and resubmit after chat with editor. #ukteenchat #liviainrome

Another teen romance 💕 I had to do a lot more research for this one though, as we are heading to venice! It's a standalone but kind of an unrelated cousin if that a makes sense? 🤔 I'll hopefully be able to share more soon though. #ukteenchat

The beauty of Italy is every area and region has something different to offer. The range is incredible #ukteenchat

Coffee and sweet treats are the only constants ☕️🍪Everything else depends on life, deadlines, and ultimately my young bosses (aka my two daughters). I write in the car, in cafés, on the sofa or in bed at home...almost anywhere but a desk! #ukteenchat

In the middle. Planster? I spend a bit of time on a synopsis for the big picture and overall shape, but that's as detailed as it gets. Once I know what the character wants, what's in their way, and where to end up, I claw my way through a first draft. HATE first drafts! #ukteenchat #liviainrome

I have a real soft spot for an area called Monti. It’s where I lived and where the book is set. Quiet streets, quirky indie shops, delicious food, and a proper local feel right in the centre. #ukteenchat

I’ve spent a lot of time in Italian bars 🫠...seriously though, it sounds bad but they're really cafés at the heart of a neighbourhood. My parents had a café in Scotland too, and I grew up in the flat above it so it's kind of a mash-up of both worlds. It really is the book of my heart! #ukteenchat

151

Bruna De Luca @brunadeluca.bsky.social · 02/12/2025

Right? I like wondering how on earth they get get together by the end of the book. We kind of know how romances end, but getting there is the fun part #ukteenchat #liviainrome

Yes! I love it when there's a cultural mix or an interesting setting for all these little tidbits!

Bruna De Luca @brunadeluca.bsky.social · 02/12/2025

I had great fun writing back-and-forth between Livia and Giulio as they try to outdo each other behind the bar. Enemies-to-lovers is my favourite trope (even when it's not the kill-you-with-a-sword kind) as a reader so I really wanted to dig in to that 💘. #ukteenchat

Bruna De Luca @brunadeluca.bsky.social · 02/12/2025

There are tips in the book like never having cappuccino past 11am 😂 #ukteenchat

141

Bruna De Luca @brunadeluca.bsky.social · 02/12/2025

The heart of the book comes from lived experience and that neither-fish-nor-fowl aspect. I lived in italy and in Rome for years and met a lot of third-culture-kids who felt the way I did. A lot of it is experience and memory, but mine is bad so I made trips to double-check things! #ukteenchat

Livia's problem - being the clichè foreign girl, when you really don't want to be the clichè foreign girl #ukteenchat

Yes, and the enemies to lovers aspect 😉
