Loving the new Ghost in the Shell. Read the comic before the movie even came out so it's great to see this version in motion finally. It's a long shot, but I'd be doubly excited if they did Orion after this as well. The character energy and animation would be perfect for capturing Seska and Susano.

Oh man, Cosmic Encounter is my actual favorite board game. I even organized my set in this carry case to lug it to game nights, lol.

Wanted to get a copy of Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games for a while now, and finally picked one up. Such a quality book. Also it’s too nice not to keep it protected, so I made a slipcase for it.

We're just a month away from releasing Street Cleaner 3 to the world, with the companion album of new Street Cleaner music! If you're into challenging retro 8-bit platformers we'd love it if you could help out and add it to your wishlist for the final stretch! #indiegame #pixelart streetcleaner3.com

Another mysterious room finished on stream today. This is locking down the last of the content I have planned for Street Cleaner 3's launch. We're so close! Wishlist at streetcleaner3.com, and watch us dev at www.twitch.tv/creakylantern! #indiedev #pixelart

Had to cut stream early, but in the couple hours online I was able to make plasma beam emitting rats! The final sprite won't be rats, but I usually use that when I need a temp sprite.

Here's 4096 copies of the logo being transformed in the compute shader at 60fps. I'm sure this could do way better, but I have an absolute potato of a video card.
The Creaky Lantern Games logo being drawn as 4096 randomly placed and rotated overlapping quads. You can't even see the beautiful cornflower blue background any more.

Brooks Bishop @brooksb.bsky.social · 06/12/2024
This may not look like much, but after a bunch of work on stream I managed to get a Vulkan compute shader to transform sprite info into a vertex stream on the GPU! This is probably way overkill for the kinds of games I make, but I enjoy the learning. www.twitch.tv/creakylantern
A simple looking screenshot displaying a single textured quad of the Creaky Lantern Games logo over a cornflower blue background that belies the technical complexity of using a Vulkan compute shader to generate the vertices on GPU.

During today's stream we got a big raid of people interested in graphics programming, so I switched gears and made a mesh builder to create a spline-based road using SDL3's new GPU tools. Learned a lot and had a bunch of fun! #indiedev www.twitch.tv/creakylantern

Lately in between finishing up the final bits of content for Street Cleaner 3, I've been working on learning more modern GPU methodologies with SDL3 and I've got it drawing colored triangles! When I have a better grasp of this I plan on doing some code jamming on stream with a couple game ideas.
A screen capture showing some graphics code using SDL3's GPU library, along with the output: a rectangular window featuring a calming cornflower blue background (thank you XNA), and a pair of triangles with corner colors forming a rectangle. Hi, I'm Brooks! The designer, programmer, and artist at Creaky Lantern Games. We made Aeternum (bullet hell shmup) and Street Cleaner: The Video Game (8-bit retro platformer). We're making a sequel to Street Cleaner, streaming dev MWF at www.twitch.tv/creakylantern. See creakylantern.com for more!

Spent a bunch of today's dev stream feeling out a design for a boss fight and ended up with this. It's still very much a work in progress, but it's a start! I'll be back to working on it more on Friday! www.twitch.tv/creakylantern

A fun little thing I made a while ago after watching one of my cats curled up asleep.

Another one of my older character sketches. My take on a non-binary cyber punk sword master. I don't really have plans at the moment to do a game where a character like this would fit, but it's fun to stretch out from time to time. #pixelart

I had this idea for a carousel horse boss in the mall stage of Street Cleaner 3. It has proven to be a bit too out of place for the vibe of the game and is thus getting cut, but damned if it didn't turn out majestic as hell.

Got a window running using SDL with an OpenGL context written in the ODIN language, and it wasn't overly difficult. Considering using this for my tooling in the future, because maintaining and adding to my animation editor in C++ is super annoying.

New game has a mall stage, so of course I had to sneak in a bunch of parodies, jokes, and references.

I’m a big fan of Sam Lake, and he recently posted a bunch of book recommendations. I thought it would be fun to go through those and picked up a few cheap used copies to get started. House of Leaves I already had and I’ve read a couple times now, so I think I’ll start with The Buried Giant.

Doing some pixel art "sketches," because I think the Street Cleaner sequel needs a couple more enemy types, and very often in trying to capture the essence of a recognizable person in NES palette/scale I find something that clicks, even if it's not exactly as the sketch itself.
Pixel art characters, mostly 80's actors and musicians, rendered in NES palette at a very small scale.
