Earlier today we handed in our donkey skin trade petition, containing nearly 60,000 signatures of support, to the Amazon UK headquarters in London. We hope that after seeing this petition, Amazon will agree to meet with Brooke to learn more about the devastating impact of the donkey skin trade.
An image of a donkey stood in a shelter with it's head lifted and chin resting slightly on the top bar of a wooden fence. The donkey is looking directly at the camera with it's ears pricked. Other donkeys can be seen stood in the shelter behind it.

In the top left corner of the image is an orange paint-effect square stamp with block wording that reads: "PROTECT DONKEYS END THE SKIN TRADE"

In the bottom quarter of the image, white bold writing reads: "PETITION HANDED IN! 60,000 SIGNATURES"

We’re currently at the UK headquarters of Amazon to hand in our donkey skin trade petition. Nearly 60,000 signatures on the petition show that the UK public do not want donkey skin products, also known as ejiao, to be available for sale on this retailer’s website. #BanDonkeySkinTrade #ProtectDonkeys

One year ago today, Dr Scott Miller travelled to Kenya with Brooke to witness the devastating reality of the donkey skin trade. The stories we heard and people we met continue to inspire us, but unfortunately, millions of donkeys remain at risk due to this brutal, largely hidden trade.
Brooke's donkey skin trade ambassador, Dr Scott Miller, crouches down in front of a donkey during his trip to Kenya. He is sideways on the camera, looking at the donkey and with his hands cradling the donkey's face. The donkey is also stood sideways on to the camera, looking at Scott and with it's ears pricked forward. The donkey appears relaxed but still alert. They are both within a green shelter where donkeys are rehabilitated after being rescued from the donkey skin trade.

Her Majesty the Queen wears a blue dress and stands next to a shetland pony wearing a Brooke branded rug. Two members of Brooke staff, wearing navy blue Brooke branded polo shirts, stand to the right of Her Majesty, one holding the lead rope to the shetland pony, the other holding the lead rope of a miniature donkey, who also wears a Brooke-branded rug.
Behind them all are two royal horses and guards.

Donkeys are a lifeline for women. When they are stolen & killed, it’s women who suffer most. Where donkey populations have shrunk, women have to walk further for basic necessities like water & firewood. Children also reduce school attendance to tend to household chores. #BanDonkeySkinTrade

On the bottom half of the slide, there's a photo of a woman, wearing a beige t-shirt and red trousers, stood beside her donkey which has a padded harness for carrying water cans on it's back.

Working equines play a vital role in the daily life of millions & are crucial to climate & disaster response. However, they are rarely included in disaster risk management (DRM) planning or policy, & there is limited evidence on how disasters affect them & the communities that depend on them.

The donkey skin trade is a growing global issue that is decimating donkey populations. Donkeys are sentient animals who have worked alongside people for centuries. Most of this is widely hidden from public view. The more people who understand what is happening, the harder it becomes to ignore

Important announcement regarding Brooke's work in India...
It is with profound sadness that, after 25 years, our Brooke India operations will be closing.

Since 2001, the exceptional teams, partners and valued communities we work with have dramatically changed the lives of millions of horses, donkeys and mules. This impact was only made possible by the generosity of our wonderful supporters and our dedicated team on the ground.

In recent years, due to changes to India’s regulatory environment for charities, Brooke India has been engaging with authorities to ensure that the arrangements put in place when it was first created were still appropriate. As part of this engagement, Brooke India applied for registration under the Foreign Contribution (Regulations) Act (FCRA) in December 2024.During the process, regulators indicated that aspects of the current structure may not fully align with current regulatory requirements.

As a result, Brooke UK is unable to provide further funds to ensure the continuation of operations. With no viable alternative, Brooke India’s leadership have taken the extremely difficult decision to end our charity operations in the country.

This has been a deeply painful step for everyone involved. We have been honoured to support these working animals and their communities and will do everything we can to continue doing so in the future.

Our work in other regions will continue as normal, giving working horses, donkeys and mules a life worth living.
