I saw it last night too and was gripped from beginning to end.

Got back today from a wonderful 3+1/2 day mini cycling tour of Brittany: 380 km (240 mls), finishing with a fantastic 150 km (95 mile) ride through the hills + forests of central Brittany. This has whet my appetite for what will hopefully be a longer sponsored ride next year. 🚴‍♂️

I think most people in England at least use Britain as a shorthand generally, as they do the British Isles also, but that’s wrong too. But in NI it will depend on which community you belong to. As an Irish passport holder myself I wouldn’t include Ireland in the British Isles.

The Olympic Games gives us the correct answer, John, as the official GB team name is “Great Britain and Northern Ireland” and this is despite official branding referring to “Team GB” as a shorthand. GB + NI together give you the UK.

I have a real soft spot for Scorcese's Hugo. The reveal about Sir Ben Kingsley's character Georges was a lovely surprise. A heartfelt love letter from Scorcese to the pioneers of early cinema. On the Kingsley scale of performances it's very much Good Ben as opposed to Gandhi Ben.

There were 16 teams taking part. Rennes seminary did us proud and got to the final where they lost 2-0.

2 weeks after the cycling champs for priests + religious, I was invited to Rennes, Brittany for the national French 7-a-side football tournament for seminarians to provide a bit of musical accompaniment to the evening meal, singing songs associated with football + rugby.

Minority Report. This film hasn’t aged a jot. A visually stunning neo-Noir sci-fi romp, in which Tom Cruise‘s John Anderton learns empathy + the ability to see with someone else’s eyes, both figuratively + literally. Prophetic in its predictions of the tech revolution. Spielberg‘s masterpiece.

Found it more creepy than genuinely scary though. When teaching the horror genre I used The Descent + Eden Lake a lot as they also covered the British cinema angle which we had to look at. Both genuinely freaked me out at the cinema but Eden Lake is the one that has stayed with me. That ending!! 😱😱😱

Blair Witch was one of those films that the less you knew about it before seeing it the better. I think it did suffer a backlash due to all the hype, but I’ll never forget seeing it for the first time and the way it gradually ratchets up the tension culminating in that very effective finale...

40 mins to go until the start of the International Mass in Lourdes and the underground Basilica (Pius X) is already full to the brim. Enjoying the atmosphere created by the young people from the different French dioceses playing singing tennis!! 🤣 #JoyOfTheGospel

…I’ll be singing in a concert entitled Irish Symphony (Irlande Symphonique) in a choir of 85 singers + 60 piece orchestra + Breton pipe band, performing music by Irish composer Shaun Davey. 1st rehearsal for the latter the other day. See comment for an idea of what we’ll be getting up to.

After having had my first taste of this wonderful inter-Celtic festival last year, singing in a concert as part of the Breton language mixed voice choir Ensemble Polyphonique de Bretagne, this year I’ll be taking part in two concerts; the EPB are singing once again and…

A fantastic performance by #BagadBrieg At the NYC St. Patrick’s Parade in Brooklyn, USA, one of the most renowned Breton pipe bands, based in the small town of Briec (Brieg in Breton) just a few miles from where I live in Finistère. (See link below)

I’m with you. It was my introduction to Gosling as an actor and it’s an exceptional performance. As a Jewish neo-Nazi with father issues he manages to be both terrifying and vulnerable.

Saw that she also wrote the score to the Ralph Fiennes Juliette Binoche account of the Odysseus myth, The Return. That film has just leapt up some places on my Must See list as a result.

Though not an adaptation of one of their books, I’d also like to plug the Frances O’Connor “Emily” from 2022 with Emma Mackey which I really enjoyed.

After a quick search to remind myself which I’d seen, I remember really liking the Cary Joji Fukunaga “Jane Eyre” with Mia Wasikowska + Michael Fassbender. There’s a Japanese 1988 “Wuthering Heights” set in Medieval Japan which sounds intriguing, but which I’ve not seen.

The DfE has acted on school exclusions for trivial reasons and served notice that internal exclusion must be "a short, structured intervention with meaningful learning." Some of us have argued for years that schools too quick to exclude harm pupils. johncosgrove55.wordpress.com/2019/10/26/t...

The Last Resort?

(All names have been changed) Exclusion is a last resort, we are told, and justified because, “You can’t allow violent and disruptive pupils to stop others from learning.” This is true. …

I was put in mind today of this exchange in the @edgarwright.bsky.social film “The World’s End”: “You do know that ‘The 3 Musketeers’ is a fiction, right? Written by Alexandre Dumas?” “A lot of people are saying that about the Bible today.” “What, that it was written by Alexandre Dumas?”

One of the Brothers in our house here in Finistère, a former teacher missionary in Senegal, Frère Adolphe(!), was nicknamed “Mr. Fredricksen” by the 6th formers I took to Senegal in 2010 for his resemblance to the “Up!” character.

One film neither Simon nor Mark mentioned in relation to Jack (this time, at least) is the extraordinary Eden Lake. Jack is terrific in it, but the final sequence is up there with The Mist (which I love) as one of the all-time bleakest endings on film. E. Lake is brilliantly, gut-punchingly bleak.

Funny how this poem by Robert Frost (1874–1963) can be reinterpreted in today’s world and find a new relevance. 😳

Lovely to be able to share my personal testimony with a group of nearly 30 lycéens (6th formers) in Brest this evening, and to help with the music for the mass that began our time together. A big thanks to Sr. Clémence and her fellow Sisters of St John for inviting me!
