John Malkovich shockingly not the intense or intimidating figure I expected from his performances, but surprisingly drily funny and self-deprecating. He also thinks JFK's murder was a fix. My write-up of his LFF Screen Talk. www.bfi.org.uk/london-film-...

Not all technological innovation is necessarily progress, and AI does seem to be actively setting humanity back (and with remarkable speed). It's shameful that governments have been encouraging these freaks.

It's odd that Bale is a Malick guy. (Three films, successfully made the final cut of two!) Bale's repeat collaborators are people like Mangold, Russell, Cooper - guys he can ACT for. But he lets himself be a director's tool for Malick, especially in KoC, where he's more Bressonian model than actor.

Knight of Cups is image after image of stunning emptiness. On first watch I thought that made it an empty film, but it's the world that the character inhabits that's empty, his environment by turns sterile and gaudy, and hosting an endless parade of women and cameoing movie stars. Malick's 8 1/2.

Edgier than the TV series, Michael Mann’s take on Miami Vice is gritty and intoxicating
Where the 80s series was all pastels and shoulder pads, the noughties action thriller has flip phones and Linkin Park – a better fit for a less optimistic world

I do wish Nolan would hire a script doctor to iron some of the blunt Nolanisms out of his films, but he is also capable of writing lovely moments for his actors to sing (the Elliot Page and Benny Safdie scenes in that Hades sequence; Matt Damon's monologue on the shame and horror of Troy).

I watch The Odyssey, and I think back to the @rememberthispod.bsky.social The Old Man Is Still Alive series. Tenet hinted it was coming, but I think The Odyssey confirms Nolan has entered his old man phase. At 55, with nothing left to prove, Nolan's fixating on his interests and getting weird.

Marilyn Monroe is the best actor in this scene. Watch the eyes: everyone else is playing the lines, but Monroe's going deeper, a thought given to every word and gesture. She deserved to play dramatic roles for years after this, but still, what a final performance. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzba...

There are many reasons why Hollywood is insufficiently responding to what is a fraught political moment: midbudget cinema (where 'grown-up' stories used to live) is at death's door, audiences are processing the moment through other media, Trump supplicants have increasing control of the studios.

Robert Aramayo is very good in I Swear, but I've seen so many artless, saccharine Sunday teatime British dramas I couldn't help saying "Why are British films LIKE this?" out loud ten minutes into the damn thing. Careless script, no technical imagination. This kind of British cinema must be stopped.

Sometimes I worry that films I as a teenager thought were completely awesome will now disappoint me, a jaded adult. Could Tony Scott's restless, reactionary revenge thriller work for me in 2026? I can report that Man on Fire still absolutely rules. Denzel's best collab with a Scott (either brother)?
