Yeah absolutely. I get why it was such a big deal, and it's held up pretty good for what it is, but I also don't think it's aged as flawlessly as a lot of people claim.

Like YEAH i have absolutely no doubt this was incredible for the time! I can very much see why this game was such a big deal!! But a lot of the challenge in level design seems to be fighting against the controls to not accidentally launch Mario directly into a pit. Maybe that's on purpose...?

One thing that's been really fun working on this game has been experimenting with different workflows and art styles. The first trees I made are just using a recoloured unused asset from Stomp and these ones were made in a weird 3D sculpting plugin for Unity called Clayxels

i think we are right to bemoan the state of Media Literacy. but the environment is what it is, you know. if you are writing queer stories, and you want those stories to be legible to a non-queer audience, then at some point you kind of just have to have your characters say the fucking thing out loud

i think also we should maybe step back and re-examine the idea that "having the character say the word trans out loud" and "subtle, complex character writing" are mutually-exclusive choices in the first place. like, they're clearly not, right? i think maybe it's bad that we treat it like they are…?
