Still Modern: Dave Holland at 80

Spoke with the towering, perpetually underrated bassist-composer-bandleader Dave Holland for nearly 90 minutes on the occasion of his 80th birthday + the release of a boxed set of previously unreleased live records. Necessarily edited for length. daily.bandcamp.com/features/dav...

The legendary bassist reflects on Miles Davis, his great working bands, and decades of making music.

Wolves getting torched from the corners in transition

Great skip pass by Cody Williams, who had 4 dimes in blowout time in first game.

0130

Wolves yield 99 points in first three quarters. Pacers shooting 55.7% from the field and a whopping 53.6% from deep (15-28)

150

Joan now getting burned by stretch 5, Huff, getting open looks from deep

190

Also not sure they are all his fault or if it is a defensive back closest to receiver in end zone because teammate blew assignment

120

Ant is 19-1-1 at first half marker Lamelo 11-4-6 Rudy 7-8-1 Jaden 11-2-0 They are the top positives in plus/minus: Ball + Gobert +12, Jaden +11, Ant +6 Kuminga -2 and top 4 off bench all negative. Clark -9 in 2:34, next worst is Beringer -8 in 9:06. (But only 1 foul, a screen.)

0130

If there were posters of a player arriving late on a corner trey, Kuminga would have many posters

2191

Lamelo should have at least four more assists on wide open missed shots

1111

Bones ruins a very good defensive half court possession with a failed steal attempt and an open layup. Ant locking down Oubre and everyone else scrambling until then

080

Beginning to see that Ayo can't guard power forwards and perhaps large wings

180

Bill Kennedy starts his first challenge with "Good evening. Thanks for coming out and supporting NBA basketball." Big cheers. "However, the charging foul has been overturned into a blocking foul." Big boos

0222

Kuminga 1-6 in 11 minutes is not a stat line that will sustain him

1110

Kuminga with a pick-layup and then a nice interior feed to Rudy that gets him to the line. Trying to atone for terrible first quarter

0100

Lamelo (4-5) and Ant (3-4) a combined 7-9 from the field and 5-6 from deep (Ant 2-3). But rest of team 3-12 and Pacers 13-21 (61.9%)

060

Pacers on a 15-0 run, broken by second Ayo FT

160

Kuminga had a very good first game. Thus far, not so much

080

Bench falters on D again. Joan getting overwhelmed again. Biggest concern of preseason thus far, by a mile

0111

Ayo and Joan off the bench, no TJ immediately this time. Blown assignment gets Zubac wide open dunk the def possessions after Rudy sits

Ant has spent time on Siakam, the big Finch cited in our interview as someone Ant can scale up and guard this season.

060

Poker-faced reporting, my friend

020

Rudy dominant on the boards. His 6th was a putback with 7:38 to play in the first. Carlisle calls time. Lamelo nailed a wide open trey and then turned down a makeable drive to get McDaniels a wide open corner trey, which he missed. 10-4 Wolves

090

Yup, Pacers still can play that high hype pressure D

Kuminga then unsuccessfully calls his own number and gets faked out for an open jumper

180

Kuminga gets back in transition and forces Haliburton into a jumper instead of a layup

Tyreese shouts out Wolves organization for helping to make this date happen. Finch said they were approached about Pacers opening up preseason in Ames and went for it.

1272

Pacers definitely better than the Bucks and typically have given the Wolves fits with their ball pressure. See how that works against LaMelo's handle.

050

Pacer fans fill the lower bowl behind both baskets. Carlisle said that he thought Tyreese bought "thousands" of tickets, so that tracks.

050

Here *in* Ames. Starting the season off with a bang

1100

Ryan Eichten and I are lone members of Wolves beat here in middle of Iowa. It is a Haliburton game, first game back from injury + he bought a ton of tix for students, used to go here obviously; Pacers will have a rabid home crowd.

0121

The 3rd question I asked him, after starters PT + Ant def assignments, was success of p+r in offense, not usually his style, + if he'd be comfortable w/heavy dose of p+r if that's what team does well. Yes, he said, and noted there was little p+r in practice + wanted to get some work on it in Milw

Britt Robson @brittrobson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Here is Ames for Wolves-Pacers. Pregame, Finch said starters will continue to get some 1st half burn similar to Milw also said he would likely stick to his preseason idea of putting Ant on top perimeter scorer. Happened with Herro some in Milw + he intimates some on Tyreese tonight.

Anyone old enough to have lived through and participated in the Sex Pistols craze in the late 70s knows that their current tour is an embarrassing repudiation of everything that band, their fans, and that moment, stood for. It's putting blasphemy on a leash.

Went a mere 2-2 in my first-round predictions, missing on the Liberty-Lynx and Mystics-Dream series while getting Aces-Fever and Valks-Wings right. My semis ride with the consensus: Liberty over Dream and Aces over GSW, but neither will be sweeps + both very entertaining.

I wasn't being sarcastic. The last trophy was in 2017. Since then it has been very Sonics-like.

If you read the piece you will learn that both Reeve and I went into some detail on that very topic.

310

Not a bad comp. Except the Lynx have 4 trophies.

Meanwhile, the people who don't have an advocate to run their bureaucratic marathon for them may never be made good. It is a pernicious system, made all the more evil by assholes thinking we're rooting out fraud. We're torturing the vulnerable.

But it will take time, aggravation, us reaching into our own pocket for awhile and endless hours (seriously, many-hour periods on hold or at some govt building) to even begin to grind the gears toward pointing out their mistakes. Months (years?) from now there will be a check to rectify it all.
