Through breakout sessions led by the BGA team, we explored how the region could deepen its German focus across youth engagement, education, culture and sport. It was brilliant to connect, exchange ideas and spotlight the fantastic initiatives already happening across Oxfordshire.

It was a wonderful evening, made even more special by Prof. Henrike Lähnemann’s fascinating talk on German hymns and James Carpenter FRCO’s beautiful playing of the historic Walcker organ.

Being able to have in-person discussions and brainstorming sessions all about twinning was so valuable - we touched upon themes such as regional partnerships, youth-centric German language initiatives, upcoming regional events and general inspiration for us at the BGA to take on.

There’s actually a scientific reason for this: you never see absolute black in the dark as neurons in your retina always fire tiny signals - creating an internal visual ‘noise’ that your brain registers as a faint dark grey. (2/3)

#WordyWednesday: Have you heard of the German word ‘Eigengrau’? Literally translating to ‘own/intrinsic-grey’, it’s typically used to describe that peculiar grey tone you see when you close your eyes in total darkness (1/3)

Did you go to school in Germany, and have a fond memory of your own Schultüte? Was it decorated with your favourite cartoon character, or name? And for those dual-nationals living in the UK - did your family carry on the tradition when you attended your first day of school here?

British-German Association (BGA) @britgerassoc.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
‘Der erste Schultag’ - the first day of school - is set individually by Germany’s 16 federal states, and occurs during August and September of each year. So if you’re in Germany, keep an eye out for these colourful and adorable cones over the next few weeks!

Germany’s schoolkids are heading back to school, and ‘Schultüte’ time begins for those in first-grade classes! A Schultüte is an iconic symbol for first-years, filled to the brim with different sweets and treats to enjoy when coming back from their first ever day of school.

Seeing Moore's sculptures in person is wonderful, particularly at such an iconic and beautiful site as Kew. Let us know if you've also managed to see the Goslar Warrior in person!

British-German Association (BGA) @britgerassoc.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
Moore's 'Goslar Warrior' was a piece originally commissioned for the German town of Goslar, and is part of a rare few sculptures that depict a lone male figure at such a scale. It touches on Moore's personal experience of war, with a big nod to Ancient Greek art.

We don't really have a word like this in English, but if we did make a similarly catchy-sounding one, what do you think it should be?

It's usually a highly detailed storyline you create in your head, particularly when something triggers your imagination like listening to a song, reading a book or watching a film. Sometimes though, it can be used in a negative way, like over-playing a past or upcoming situation

#WordyWednesday: have you ever heard of the German word 'Kopfkino'? It's a lovely, catchy word that perfectly describes a moment when you truly allow yourself to delve into a 'movie in your mind'.

As Andy Burnham walks into 10 Downing Street, we walk down memory lane! In 2021, the BGA initiated the strategic partnership between Greater Manchester and the Ruhr region. During the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, the now Prime Minister sported our BGA tie!

Good luck to England tonight! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 We’re bringing out a bit of German for good luck - maybe Thomas Tuchel will be using the phrase too today! “Fußballgott” means ‘football god’. Let’s hope ‘he’s on our side’ tonight… you can even use the phrase to describe a remarkable player on our ‘11-a-side’ team 😉
