"Just build more houses." Who builds them? Double construction-skills funding, £2bn → £4bn/yr, 10 yrs: the housing gap closes, rents and prices ease. The bill: a wider deficit — and it hires the same workers social care needs → pro.britain2036.app/lever/construction_skills_investment?v=200&h=10

Migration fell — and it just cost the Chancellor £4–7bn of budget headroom. Fewer arrivals eases rents and house prices, but means fewer workers and taxpayers too, so less tax comes in. One lever, both sides move. No free lunch → britain2036.app/lever/net_migration_target?v=100&h=10

"Just train more doctors and nurses." 73k → 97k training places, nothing moved, 10 yrs. Unlike funding the NHS, this one grows staffing — shorter waits, better GP access. Catch: years of upfront cost, and social care loses the same staff → pro.britain2036.app/lever/nhs_training_places?v=97&h=10

"Crack down on illegal working." Double the enforcement tempo, 10 years. It steadies cohesion and calms the politics — but pulling that labour out leaves jobs unfilled, thins output, and the deficit widens. A real lever, real cost → pro.britain2036.app/lever/illegal_labour_enforcement?v=200&h=10

"Just build council homes." £12bn → £21bn a year on social housing, nothing moved, 10 yrs. It lands: rents ease, satisfaction and cohesion up. Catch — deficit widens, growth dips, the build bids for NHS staff. Homes now, bill attached → britain2036.app/lever/social_housing_investment?v=21&h=10

"Just rip up the planning rules." +50% on reform, 10 years, nothing else moved. The housing gap narrows, rents and prices ease. The catch — a near-term hit to growth and the deficit while it beds in. Build faster, pay upfront → pro.britain2036.app/lever/planning_reform_intensity?v=150&h=10

"Just invest in infrastructure and grow." £20bn → £30bn/yr, all else held, 10 years. It works: growth up, housing gap narrows, hospital waits fall. Bill: a wider deficit, political heat, staff pulled from the NHS. Growth you pay for → pro.britain2036.app/lever/infrastructure_investment?v=150&h=10

"Just fund the NHS properly." £192bn → £240bn a year, nothing else moved, 10 years. Hospital waits fall. The catch: the deficit widens, growth dips, and it hires from the same staff pool social care is short of. Shorter waits, real bill → britain2036.app/lever/nhs_spending?v=240&h=10

"Raise corporation tax and business flees." +5pp — 25% to 30%, ≈£15bn/yr, nothing moved, 10 years. The model's twist: deficit relief steadies the politics and the public mood, little downside over the decade. The counterintuitive one → pro.britain2036.app/lever/corporation_tax_change?v=5&h=10

"Enforcement is just theatre." Double the border budget — ~£500m → ~£1bn/yr, 10 years — and the model mostly nods: steadier confidence, calmer politics, little downside. Yet double removals and it balks. Same instinct, opposite results → britain2036.app/lever/border_enforcement_budget?v=200&h=10

"Just fund GP surgeries properly." £15bn → £22.5bn/yr, nothing else moved, 10 years. It works: easier GP appointments, shorter hospital waits. The catch — it hires from the same pool the hospitals need, and the deficit widens. Real fix, real bill → pro.britain2036.app/lever/gp_investment?v=150&h=10

Britain 2036 @britain2036.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
"Just train our own workers." Double apprenticeship starts, ~353k → ~706k a year, nothing else moved, 10 years. Fills vacancies, staffs the NHS, narrows inequality — but bids for the same people social care needs, widens the deficit → britain2036.app/lever/apprenticeship_skills_investment?v=200&h=10

"Just deport more." Double removals — ~9,400 → ~18,800 a year, nothing else moved, 10 years. Enforcement has a role, but doubling it earns little in the model: real costs, thinner output, more political heat. No free lunch. → pro.britain2036.app/lever/removal_enforcement_intensity?v=200&h=10

"Just fund social care properly." £27bn → £39bn a year, nothing else moved, 10 years. It works — more care staff, shorter hospital waits. The catch: it pulls from the same workforce the NHS needs, and the deficit widens. Real fix, real bill → britain2036.app/lever/social_care_funding?v=39&h=10

"Raise income tax 5p and you'll choke the economy." One lever, nothing else moved, 10 years. The twist: the deficit relief tips growth net positive over the decade and even steadies the politics — little downside. The counterintuitive one → britain2036.app/lever/income_tax_change?v=5&h=10

The two-child benefit cap ended in April — and Reform now pledges to bring it back. The model bills it either way: scrapping lifts ~300k+ kids out of poverty and costs ~£3.5bn/yr; reimposing reverses both. Same two numbers, opposite signs → pro.britain2036.app/lever/two_child_cap

"Just take defence to 3.75%." One lever, nothing else moved, 10 years. It lifts Britain's standing abroad — and the bill lands on the deficit, NHS staffing, and the political heat at home. No free lunch. Whose budget? You pick → britain2036.app/lever/defence_spending_gdp_pct?v=375&h=10

"A wealth tax raises nothing." "It fixes everything." Both wrong. 2% over £10m, everything else held, 10 years: real receipts and less inequality — paid for in GDP drag and some capital flight. Not nothing, not a cure. See the trade-off → pro.britain2036.app/lever/wealth_tax

"Just cut net migration to 100k." We moved that lever, held every other policy, ran it 10 years. It eases rents, house prices and the housing gap — and shrinks the workforce, cuts tax receipts, widens the deficit. No verdict, just the cascade → britain2036.app/lever/net_migration_target?v=100&h=10

"Just build more houses." 300k → 450k a year, nothing else moved, 10 years. The model agrees: closes the housing gap, eases rents and prices, little downside. The one honest catch — the build itself lags 2–5 years, not a hidden bill → britain2036.app/lever/housebuilding_target?v=450&h=10

The hardest UK politics game isn't a quiz — it's the budget. Set immigration, tax, the NHS and housing, run Britain to 2036, and try to turn all six gauges green. Most attempts leave at least one stuck red: every easy fix just shoves the shortfall somewhere else. britain2036.app

"A wealth tax raises nothing." "It fixes everything." The model says both camps are wrong: 2% over £10m brings real receipts and less inequality — paid for in GDP and capital flight. No free lunch, no ruin either. pro.britain2036.app/lever/wealth...

"The new trade-offs look a lot like the old trade-offs." New tenant at No.10, same arithmetic — the budget didn't notice the reshuffle. Every "yes" is still a quiet "no" somewhere else. Feel where it bends: britain2036.app

62 people have now run Britain to 2036. The most common result isn't utopia — it's "Balanced Centrist," because the second you chase one gauge green, two others go red. The model doesn't do free lunches. Beat it: britain2036.app/leaderboard

The new head of the OBR marks the government's homework against a forecast five years out. The catch we built into the sim: the bill for today's "win" often lands in year four — about when the people who promised it have moved on. Sit in the chair: britain2036.app

"High immigration brings more crime." Belief grew 30%→39% (2023–25). What's measurable: foreign nationals are 12.4% of prisoners; younger, so age-adjusted you'd expect ~15% — under-represented. Reviews find no statistical link. Data has limits; treat single figures with care. britain2036.app

New leader, same spreadsheet. Whoever's running the country next inherits the exact levers everyone else did — and the model doesn't read the nameplate. £23bn of May borrowing didn't care who won the by-election. Set the policy, see the bill: britain2036.app

Nobody's got every gauge green. Not the left, not the libertarians, not us. Set every lever to your ideal, hit run, and the model hands back a worse Britain — every win has a bill filed somewhere else. Think you can make it balance? britain2036.app/leaderboard

"Migrants don't learn English and don't integrate." It's measurable: 90% say they speak English well. Main-language use climbs from 35% of recent arrivals to ~75% at 20+ years settled. By the next generation the gaps largely vanish. A process, not a snapshot. No verdict. britain2036.app

"Immigration is why you can't afford a house." The surprise: a major UK study (Sá 2015) found immigration = 1% of a local population linked to house prices FALLING 1.7%, as higher earners leave. Evidence is mixed; it's mostly a building problem migration interacts with. No verdict. britain2036.app

"Migrants get everything free." What they can actually claim: most on work/study/family visas get no mainstream benefits for 5 years; a state pension needs 10 years of NI. OBR estimate for an avg-earning arrival at 25: ~£341k contributed over a life. Depends on earnings. No verdict. britain2036.app

Quite a few of you arrived via FT Alphaville's Further Reading this morning — welcome. The link asked whether you can run Britain. The model's standing answer: every lever moves two things at once, and every win has a bill. Have a go. britain2036.app

"Immigration is overwhelming the NHS." But 1 in 5 NHS staff are non-British — 36% of doctors, 30% of nurses. Migrants add demand to the NHS and are a huge share of the people running it. A dial with two ends, not a switch. No verdict. britain2036.app

Everyone agrees defence should hit 3.5% of GDP. Almost no one says where the £30-40bn a year comes from. The sim won't let you dodge it: raise defence and you pick the bill — tax, other services, growth or borrowing. "Fund it all" isn't a setting the maths allows.

Britain 2036 @britain2036.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
We built a UK policy sim and the most common reaction is mild annoyance: people set every lever to their ideal and expect utopia. The model won't hand it over. Every win has a bill attached somewhere. Not pessimism — just the arithmetic most manifestos leave out.
000
Britain 2036 @britain2036.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
"Tax the rich" and "grow the pie" get treated as opposites. They're a dial. A little redistribution barely dents growth; push it hard and you erode the tax base that funds the services. The useful question is where the line bends — so we let you find it.
000
Britain 2036 @britain2036.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
The two-child cap splits cleanly: one side sees £3bn we can't spare, the other the most cost-effective cut to child poverty going. Both are true. In the sim you scrap it and watch child poverty AND the deficit move on one screen — then decide if the trade's worth it.

Britain 2036 @britain2036.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
A thing our UK policy simulator keeps showing: immigration volume is rarely the NHS's binding constraint — funding and workforce are. Slam the borders shut or throw them open and the health score barely moves. You can test it yourself — every assumption's public. britain2036.app
