I'm going to *remembers how many times in my life I didn't tell anyone I was suicidal* you know, I'm not going to, but I honestly think even joking about it is better than never talking about it, and I think people who have dealt with such a difficult thing deserve to be able to joke about our own experiences without getting lectured about some knock-off CBT that's been ground up and shat out of the online pop psychology void, and also you know this format in itself is a suicide joke right it's just euphemistic

Kinda wild how most people generally recognize that the "too sick to go to school, too sick to watch tv/play games" mindset our parents had was bullshit but still impose essentially the exact same rules on disabled adults and scrutinize them for enjoying low-energy hobbies while being too fatigued or in pain to work a full time job (or any job at all)

yk guys I think a lot of ppl when arguing against the death penalty go for a like "people don't deserve death, etc" view and I get why ppl argue for that I rly do! but it doesn't matter. I don't trust the government to do it, I don't trust them to decide who should die, I don't trust them to determine who is mentally competent, I don't trust them to not be bigoted and discriminatory in their practices, I don't trust them to have the right people, I don't trust them to execute it in a humanitarian way. and I've had discussions with ppl who otherwise have similar viewpoints to me in many ways but can think of people they think deserve to die, and I think it abolishing the death penalty is like, a super important cause to u the same way it is to me, the argument u use shouldn't be "well these people deserve to live" (although in some cases I think yeah the death penalty is done to people who totally don't "deserve it") because that's so subjective, it should be "do you trust the government to do it?" like, do you trust the people who cant even fill potholes on your road to determine who should and should not live

if trans women were really truly seen as men by society, then terfs would respect them and whatever they wanted to do with their bodies. the reason why they are hated is because they are women in every sense.

You ever hear that old chestnut about how most people neglect the part of the story of Icarus where he also had to avoid flying too low, lest the spray of the sea soak his feathers and cause him to fall and drown?

You ever think about how different the world would be if Icarus died that way instead? If the idiom was to Fly To Close To The Sea? A warning against playing it far too safe, about not stretching your wings and soaring properly?

You ever think about how Icarus died because he was happy?

Curious about what percentage of all those pedestrian deaths from cars are actually intentional murders assumed to be accidental. We know some drivers are completely bloodthirsty towards pedestrians and cyclists beyond mere recklessness.

I notice that in general car deaths are
simultaneously massive and invisible. Even in my famously hyper-violent country of birth cars used to be about as lethal as organized crime in death statistics.

But while gangs were at times the defining national problem that everyone was sick of, deaths from cars were seemingly not worth discussing.

self-loving-vampire
More than one person I know has had people trying to hit them with their car as an attempted hate crime, and looking online this doesn't seem uncommon. The cops are useless about it as usual too.

basic-bamboo
If you are someone who uses like a power chair or a motor scooter and live somewhere without a sidewalk you have to be in the road and it is extremely common for drivers to just...try to run you off the road. One of my friends messages me every time it happens to her, often the only thing that dissuades drivers is her service dog. They want to hit her, a power chair user, they do not want to hit a dog.

it is wild how many ppl in the fucking trans community think that suffering from gender dysphoria is a failure to have sufficiently radical gender politics

kayla-denker
I **hate** the current trend of claiming "gender dysphoria isn't real" when what they mean is
"gender dysphoria is **pathologized.**" Because there's pretty obviously a big fucking distinction between those two statements.

Dysphoria almost killed me. I had a gun in my hand ready to blow my brains out over it. And if it ever became clear that I wouldn't be able to get bottom surgery, I would have killed myself. Period. I was not going to live the rest of my life with a dick. My earliest memory is literally bottom dysphoria. I was 5 or 6 and I sat on my bedroom floor trying to push my dick up into my body cause I knew it wasn't supposed to be there. No amount of therapy could ever make that go away. Even if we lived in a society where transphobia didn't and had never existed, I would have that dysphoria.

Gender dysphoria is obviously very real and serious. And characterizing it as "not real" is how you get people like my former best friend who wouldn't stop trying to convince me to stop medically transitioning cause "it's just toxic beauty standards making uou hate your body."

Y'all absolutely fo need to fight against the pathologization of Gender Dysphoria. Because that is some evil shit that has killed countless trans people, especially trans women, over the last century by blocking them from being able to get access to HRT and surgery. Gender Dysphoria should not be diagnosed by any medical professional, because whether anyone has it or not should not be a metric in determining whether anyone "deserves" HRT or surgery. The fact that they want it and are asking for it should be the only requirement. All this should be over-the-counter.

But when you characterize that as "gender dysphoria isn't real", you create an environment that allows the kind of people and ideology to flourish that …

when people say "practice doing nothing. doing nothing is healthier than doomscrolling" they're lying to you. no one ever does nothing. actually doing nothing is pretty bad. they mean going out for a walk, or knitting, or snacking on something, or chatting to someone, or people watching, or listening to birds sing, or colouring in one of those colouring templates, or watching the sunset and the clouds, or doing grounding exercises in their head. they're low energy activites, but they still require some amount of energy, or require being someplace or having something, or require having an interest in one of those specific activities. when those things aren't accessible to someone then of course scrolling social media is gonna be the easiest thing to do. and I'm not saying social media is better than those things, but for people who do have an unhealthy relationship with social media, they're not gonna fix that relationship by chasing after an idealised activity of "nothing", that's just penance and they're gonna bore themselves back to where they started. they gotta find out what other mindful activities they actually like, and figure out how to make those activities more readily accessible for themselves. which can be much easier said than done

but there actually are some social cues that can be taught. like the obvious one is when someone says "how are you" they usually mean "friendly noise" and are not actually asking how you are, although some people ARE genuinely asking how you are and it's usually up to the context of your relationship to determine the difference

also that apparently "when you get a chance" usually means "when you take a break from the thing you're immediately doing" and not "on a list among various other things you are doing today or tomorrow"

and when someone says "i'll let you get going" they mean "please leave"

it's frustrating when you're talking about an inherently oppressive institution that dehumanizes everyone who is subjected to it and someone is like "it's especially bad for those it is incorrectly applied to!" as though being the intended victim of an injustice makes it less of a tragedy

chaumas-deactivated20240115
been thinking about this lately after some discussions about historical marriage where people have chimed in about how extra awful it would have been for trans men forced into The Wife Role because of dysphoria. which like. yeah. but the thing about The Wife Role in the context of not having civil rights and being the property of a husband is that it is inherently dysphoria-inducing to anyone who identifies as a human being instead of an object.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen Al for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen Al for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that Al can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen Al will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence lies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

My funniest ventriloquism story starts with the fact that I was obsessed with ventriloquism from a young age. I used to obsessively practice speaking without moving my lips, practicing the different tongue and air tricks and everything.

Then I got sick with Bell's Palsy, and it hit both sides of my face at the same time. Bell's Palsy is like a headcold that hits your facial nerves. Anyway- This meant my entire face was paralyzed. I couldn't speak using my lips. The doctor stared at me, dumbfounded that was able to speak very fluently without my face moving at all.

We talk a lot about how like, fandom in general has extremely piss poor reading comprehension, but I'm not gonna lie, the case I've seen in Amazing Digital Circus is frankly fascinating.

Like, I'm not the biggest fan of TADC, I thought it was fine, but it wasn't what I would call subtle about its themes. TADC exists very firmly in the Millennial Adult Animated series subtype, which means it looks like a kids show, while being about adult emotions, and also states its ideas extremely clearly. There's a bunch of these (BoJack Horseman and Rick & Morty are the big ones in my estimations). They are extremely direct and very blunt, which is in my mind just a neutral statement. Directness is neither positive nor negative

So here comes this show, which spends a huge chunk of its runtime explaining how basically all of the characters are damaged and need to accept themselves to heal, and then spends a MASSIVE chunk of its double length final episode detailing how its biggest piece of shit character became the way she is via a mix of self loathing and fear of her own identity, culminating with her begging the main character not to love her, literally indicating that she believes her own actions have made her irredeemable, AND THEN the whole show emotionally climaxes with said main character embracing her, choosing to love her anyway...

And a bunch of y'all seem to be champing at the bit to find new ways to punish her. Honestly y'all fascinate me.

hey questioning, near-to-cracking eggs that follow me, if you're in the US there's a pretty good chance you can get a gender-affirming care appointment at your local planned parenthood and get started on HRT by the end of the week.

tenthousandghosts
this is true of my own experience which was recent enough i can just describe exactly what i went through:

just about a year ago, i scheduled an appointment with my local planned parenthood through their website and had a telehealth appointment the next day. I spoke to the doctor for about 30, 45 minutes wherein we talked about her general strategy for working with trans patients and she asked me how I'd like to take my estradiol (i went with injections despite being extremely afraid of them which i can now also highly recommend). I didn't have to do any convincing, I didn't have to justify my own transness or anything like that, it was very straightforward.

I signed some documents that outlined the potential effects and risks of starting HRT. My doctor straight up told me that many of the risks were exaggerated.

At the end of the week, I had an appointment with a nurse at the actual planned parenthood building in my area so that she could show me how injections work. She gave me my choice of injection kit (intramuscular or subcutaneous -- i went with subcutaneous because the needles are small enough that they just do not hurt at all but it does not matter a whole lot), which contains 3 months of supplies. I stop by planned parenthood every few months to grab a new kit. Then, she had me practice going over the injection with some bottles of saline solution on some fake skin. Once i was confident enough and after she checked that my prescription was ready, i scheduled a followup appointment with my new doctor 3 months from that date. I left and filled the script at my pharmacy and started HRT on the first Friday of October.

You can seriously get started within a week and it's the best decision i ever mad…
