Having an HSA account doesn't magically lower your bill. You would pay full cost without any reductions.

It is the same idea with people taking 30+ yrs to pay off student loans. You are only paying interest for forever.

When he came out to go home, a check engine light came on. He opened the hood, and the raccoon took off! He caused about $300 worth of damage. It could have been far worse. For a while, we kept seeing two of them coming back. Hubby thought they were looking for the one who took off.

We had a raccoon visiting regularly, and then one decided to climb into the engine compartment of my husband's van that was parked on the driveway. The raccoon ended up taking a ride to work with him. It stayed there all day while he was at work, chewing on insulation and wires!

People who most certainly qualified for the program were still harassed to pay bills and then turned over to collection agencies. I used to get a lot of irate phone calls directed to my desk. I took the time to explain to people what they needed to do to get their bills reduced or even eliminated.

I honestly believe it has always been that way, but it is certainly worse now. I worked at a non-profit hospital years ago that constantly talked about the "charity care" they offered, but purposely never told anyone about how to access it. They just wanted to say they offered it.

I had a Cuban friend in HS and college. Her parents looked down on other Hispanics. I'm sure that none of them thought it would ever affect them personally - just those other people.

I will add that it was rare for anyone in my extended family to go to college. The options for the men were usually to join the military or be a laborer My mom's father, who did concrete work and other jobs, died before I was born. He had a hard life.

I was the first person in my family to go to college. My parents did everything they could to stop me, and I didn't get any help from them. My two younger siblings didn't finish HS. My education helped me be there for my parents when they needed help.

1. Let's not say goodbye to Eric Schmitt just yet. His story is about more than a power-mad senator falling on his face. It's part of a larger story about the Republicans defending the leader of an insurrection against the United States.

That is why it is far worse. The online sites use very similar tactics to entice and entrap people. My parents once left a family event early because they had a "free" dinner coupon for a casino. I told them they had a free dinner with us, too. They didn't understand the joke. They still left.

I found all the canceled checks after they died. It was astonishing how much they spent. In their 80s, they had no savings and no equity in their home. They both needed care and had no resources.

Bri @brik.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
They are destroying their future security for the short-lived thrill of an instant win. The casinos did this with my parents. They had no savings and kept remortgaging their house to gamble. My dad told me they were only spending "entertainment" money.

Online betting uses the same tactics as casinos, made worse with instant gratification amid the promise of a big win despite huge losses. My parents were caught up in it when the casinos came to town. It was the reason they had no money in their 80s and still had a mortgage.

Wendy's isn't the same as it used to be. I worked there starting at age 15. They had a drive through before McDonald's (which copied them.) The goal was less than one minute in the drive-through line from the time the order was placed! The menu was far simpler then.

Five corporations control 90% of the US media. Airlines have merged from 12 major carriers in 1980 to 4 today. A handful of companies control the pharmaceutical industry. Four giants control 80% of meat processing. The evidence of corporate concentration is everywhere.
