I've done quite well with comics, art books/ref books and genre fiction there instead of supporting Amazon. I'm also allergic to the sun, targeted by bugs and can't use most chemical/plant based defenses, so that is not a topic I had searched. Its newish and may yet expand as more stores join!

Pretty much a guarantee that its a vintage design from your description. If he can find out more about when/where the friend's dad got it that would make a brand or designer id a bit more likely? An alternative may be to get an artist to scan/replicate the pattern and print a custom replica?

Yes! I think it was originally sold as upholstery fabric? It was 3m wide (at $1/m) The kimono design means its surprisingly one of my most temperature flexible cosplays for hot and cold. Extreme humidity still makes the layers under the belt/obi in particular very uncomfortable.
