An ICE agent is in custody at a local hospital after police say he was shot after assaulting an elderly man and his daughter at a home in
Fresno.
The incident happened before 3:30 am Friday at a home in central Fresno.
The Fresno Police Department says a woman found 32-year-old David Gonzalez sleeping on her front lawn.
The woman told her 72-year-old father, who then went outside to tell Gonzalez to leave.
Once Gonzalez was woken up, police say he appeared drunk and assaulted the 72-year-old.
Police say the daughter tried to intervene to protect her father, and Gonzalez physically attacked her.
Fearing for their safety, officers say the 72-year-old man pulled out a gun and shot Gonzalez.
The woman's boyfriend, who is a police officer and was off-duty, came to the home and put Gonzalez in handcuffs.

Because the surgery thing was never really the point. The truth is that people on the anti-trans side of things just... don't want trans people to be able to exist and live our lives as we have been. They don't want trans women to be recognized in any official or unofficial capacity as women. They don't want trans men to be recognized in any official or unofficial capacity as men. They want to take away medically necessary health care for trans people of all ages (not just kids). They want discrimination against trans people to be codified in law. So there's no amount of, "Well, actually, the number of surgeries is really low..." or statistics about low regret rates or testimonies from people like Hunter Schafer or Kim Petras about how being able to medically transition as a minor made their lives better or anything that will win them over.

On point. It’s all about policing women and womanhood. Anti-trans rhetoric is inherently anti-women.
Right-wing provocateurs understand that the data is not on their side - but a
popular belief on their side is that women's sports are teeming with transgender individuals solely because many women athletes do not have the
"look" of a woman.
Someone needs to tell Cunningham that women who are not transgender are subject to being labeled as trans if they do not exude a hegemonically
"feminine" look. Brittney Griner and Lauren Betts are textbook examples of this. In fact, tall women across the board receive this flack and the WNBA is full of tall women.
In short - being anti-trans is one of the biggest examples of being anti-woman because it puts pressure on women to have to adhere to beauty standards (many of which are set by men who do not even like women, emotionally) as opposed to being their true selves.
And if being a supposed warrior on behalf of women's sports (and women in general) is Cunningham's aim, that is very short-sighted too. As we have pointed out on several occasions, the biggest threat to women's sports is not the trans community - it is misogynistic men.

Cunningham spouts her "common sense bigotry," doubles and triples down, and gets rewarded with halftime show appearances on national broadcasts.
Meanwhile, a coach who might have a different perspective on her comments and the rights of trans people to play sports is cut off by her team's PR team for a statement full of baby pablum.
When a team owner's arena is invaded by. bad-faith actors seeking to fabricate an incident, her understandable reaction and interaction with them result in disciplinary.
action from the league.
That seems pretty political to me. Choosing to coddle the bigots because you want them to keep spending their money is a devil's bargain.

Great piece; def should read it
Many decades ago, humans developed a process by which they could go into a store, pick an item off the shelf, and pay for it at the checkout counter. A few years ago, we lost it. Now you ring a buzzer, wait for an overworked employee to unlock an item that costs $5.99, and navigate the emotional complications of feeling like both a suspected criminal and an entitled ass.
The late Soviet Union was damned by the iconic image of people waiting in endless lines for scarce consumer goods. When we look back at the dying days of America, perhaps we'll think of waiting in dots, surrounded by plentiful products locked away because our bosses fear and loathe us so much they have forgotten how selling things works.
Why has our society gone backward in this small but really annoying way? Surely there must have been an epidemic of shoplifting? No, there really wasn't. Instead, the great lotion lockup was a corporate moral panic, which has been a disaster for their profits and for the rest of us a degrading enshittification of running basic errands.

The Aces’ defensive lapses were on full display late in the game. Sonia Citron got open for easy layups on cuts and perfectly delivered passes by Shakira Austin several times. She missed the last one with 12.8 seconds left in the game, but no one boxed out Austin, who converted off the offensive rebound and was fouled in the process. That play gave the Mystics a one-point lead and sealed the win.

That question is at the heart of Pitchford v.
Cain, a case being decided by the court in the coming months, which exposes how racial discrimination in jury selection continues to shape who receives a fair trial in America.
Terry Pitchford, a Black man, was sentenced to death in Mississippi in 2006 for his role in a robbery that resulted in a shopkeeper's death. He was not the shooter and had just turned 18 at the time of the offense.
During his trial, prosecutors struck four of the five prospective Black jurors. His attorney objected, arguing that the strikes were racially motivated in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment. No court has ever meaningfully reviewed that claim, which Mississippi courts dismissed on procedural grounds. This allowed credible allegations of racial discrimination to go unexamined.During oral arguments, several Supreme Court justices raised concerns that the trial court had not allowed defense counsel to fully challenge the strikes, effectively insulating the conduct from scru-tiny.
This was also not an isolated incident. The Supreme Court previously found that the same prosecutor in Pitchford's case had engaged in racial discrimination through the use of peremptory challenges during jury selection in other trials. Then, as now, Mississippi state courts failed to hold him accountable.
Batson v. Kentucky, a landmark case prohibiting racial discrimination in jury selec-tion, was decided in 1986. It was meant to end the shameful practice that undermined verdicts, excluded Black citizens from civic participation, and eroded confidence in the justice system.
And yet four decades later, the problem persists and the consequences are pro-found.

So did Trump and his advisers not think hard before the war about what to do about this stockpile of HEU[Highly Enriched Uranium]? There have so far been no indications that Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and whoever else was involved prepared for this part of the mess.
"This may be the worst
planned war in history," Cirincione says. "I see no sign that they knew what they were doing.
It seemed to be just literally bomb, bomb, bomb. There didn't seem to be a plan for how you were going to get at that particular material. If there is one, it hasn't emerged."
He adds: "As you know, the members of the Senate and the House that have emerged from classified briefings on the war are appalled at the lack of planning, not just for what they were going to do when they started the war, what the goals were, but there seems to be no plan for how to end this war."

It's also imperative to not view this war in a silo, but instead see it as part of the same violent, hegemonic project that has been conducting genocide and spreading violence across Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and beyond. We must hold elected officials accountable for failing to uphold U.S. and international law by continuing to support the transfer of weapons to Israel as it commits genocide against Palestinians. We must make it politically toxic for those lawmakers not to support legislation like the Block the Bombs Act, which aims to stop such transfers.

Life in here tends to be quite uncomfortable, stressful and monotonous, among other things.
There are often many conflicts over things as simple and trivial as snoring or leaving a small piece of trash. Here we are living together with people from different cultures, and on top of that we also have to tolerate the guards, who are often racist and mistreat us.
There is a lot of noise in here for multiple reasons, so it is quite difficult to sleep.
Seeing what one has to endure and how extremely difficult it is to get out of this
"prison" in the US without being deported (the most common situation is spending several months waiting for a court date and still being denied everything), many people end up immediately requesting "self-deportation" just to avoid having to endure the psychological torture we are being put through.
If you want stress and depression not to take over, you have to find ways to occupy and distract your mind.

The questions leftists ask about Al are: does this improve my life? Does this improve my livelihood? So far, the answer for everyone who doesn't stand to get rich off Al is no. I've been working as a writer for the past decade and watching my industry shrivel up and die as a result, so you'll excuse me if I, and the rest of the everyday people who stand to get screwed by Al, aren't particularly excited by what Al can offer society. One thing I do believe in are the words of Karl Marx: from each according to their ability, to each according to their need. The creation of a world where that is possible is not dependent on advanced technology but on human solidarity.

Yep.
What about when groups take stands that might hurt Democrats politically? The evidence that "defund the police" and other left-wing rhetoric damaged the party is weak, considering that many progressive ideas emerged from 2017 to 2020, when Democrats won the presidency and both houses of Congress. That said, it's true that groups sometimes push ideas that aren't popular in swing districts. Managing this tension actually isn't complicated though.
Candidates, particularly during election time, should run on their own proposals and carefully distance themselves from more controversial ideas of groups, without undermining broader movements.
Mamdani and, yes, Trump, have figured this out. During the presidential election, Trump repeatedly stated that Project 2025 was not his own campaign platform, while at the same time not attacking the ideas in that document or not pledging that he wouldn't implement them as president.
Last year, Mamdani remained aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America while stating he would not push its most left-wing ideas as mayor.

Defund ICE also means to repeal the $170 BILLION mandatory funding that ICE got in the OBBBA www.politico.com/news/2026/01...
President Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful
Bill gave ICE a major funding injection, which the agency has used to boost its surveillance toolkit. Its vast expansion of domestic spying equipment includes contracts with Israeli spyware company Paragon and contracts with Palantir, as well as deals with a forensic phone-cracking tool used for analyzing data on cellphones; a data broker, which collects and sells sensitive digital information on Americans, including geolocation history and addresses; and facial recognition technology used to conduct ICE operations in U.S. cities.

What is essential to understand is that it's from this obscene budget that ICE and CBP are able to run Donald Trump and Stephen Miller's terror campaign at scale. This injection of $170 billion last year, on top of their baseline budget, is how the DHS can scale up hiring, how they can offer $50,000 sign up bonuses to new, ideologically-motivated recruits, and produce the mass saturation of armed agents to blanket multiple cities to create the requisite tension needed for their liberal city harassment and mass deportation campaigns.
The fact that progressives in Congress aren't even advocating DHS's budget return to its 2024 levels, or a reduction of ~66 percent, shows just how far to the right the Overton Window is. This should be a common sense, likely very popular, minimum ante to any discussion of meaningful reform—instead it's relegated to the fringes of activist Twitter. This is almost certainly true, but Murphy and Walz are ignoring the obvious implication of their premise: Why would Congressional Democrats vote to continue fully funding the primary tool for Trump to carry out this power grab? Why would Senate Democrats, after these token reforms, be fine maintaining ICE and CBP's massive budget, permitting it to continue disciplining liberal cities, extorting them for their voter rolls, and potentially using ICE and CBP as an occupying or intimating force in the event Trump wants to corrupt—or outright steal
—the 2026 midterm or 2028 elections? If liberals in Congress really believe that DHS agents are doubling as a brown shirt force for Trump (which they, in key ways, already are) then why are they supporting the continued tripling of the brown shirt force's budget without so much as a public argument otherwise, much less a public fight?
They either don't actually believe this is a real threat, or they have some other secret mechanism of preventing the eventuality they are arguing is only months away.

This is particularly germane when it comes to the military. As legal scholar Josh Chafetz told me, while the president is commander in chief, Congress has regulatory authorities over the military, and "military discipline is squarely within Congress's purview." That's arguably what Democrats did with this video: They are doing their best to offer oversight even as Republicans will not. And they should keep it up. Big public gestures like this can force big public arguments, and the debate over whether Trump is or is not giving illegal orders is one we need to have.

It's easy to mock. But accessible masculinity appears to be the aesthetic of the new institutionalized terror in our burgeoning $200 billion police state, as ICE disappears immigrants. Members of this goon squad look like the guys who roam around America's dead malls. Yes, the aesthetic affords them powerful obscurity, sowing fear and confusion in the communities they torment; they dodge accountability through the use of facial coverings and unmarked cars. But it also makes you wonder about all the other men who look the same and aren't ICE agents."You don't know where they're from. You don't have any idea who they are, and they are given carte blanche [authority]," said Kriss Ravetto-Biagioli, author of The Unmaking of Fascist Aesthetics and a professor at UCLA. She likens ICE agents to the Nazi-era Sturmabteilung, also known as Brownshirts, many of them unemployed men and former soldiers who terrorized German towns with chaos and violence. "They were the rabble-rousers and drunks," Ravetto-Biagioli said. "They looked like a bunch of 'bros, as you might say in common parlance, and angry men who felt disaffected by being on the losing side of World War I."

His critics and opponents painted pledges such as free bus service, universal childcare and rent freezes as unworkable, unrealistic and exorbitantly expensive.
But some have hit back, highlighting the quirk of geography that underpins some of this view.
"He promised things that Europeans take for granted, but Americans are told are impossible," said the Dutch environmentalist and former government adviser Alexander Verbeek in the wake of Tuesday's election.
Verbeek backed this with a comment he had overheard in an Oslo cafe, in which Mamdani was described as an American politician who
"finally" sounded normal.
"Normal. That's the word," Verbeek wrote in his newsletter, The Planet. "Here, taking care of one another through public programs isn't radical socialism. It's Tuesday."
That view hit on the wide differences in how Mamdani's promises are seen by many across the Atlantic. "Europeans recognize his vision about free public transit and universal childcare. We expect our governments to make these kinds of services accessible to all of us," said Verbeek. "We pay higher taxes and get civilized societies in return. The debate here isn't whether to have these programs, but how to improve them."

If we were to simply listen to the smart voices of those who aren't lost in the hype cycle, we might see that it is not inevitable that Al systems use content without the consent of creators, and it is not impossible to build Al systems that respect commitments to environmental sustainability. We can build Al that isn't centralized under the control of a handful of giant companies. Or any other definition of "good Al" that people might aspire to. But instead, we end up with the worst, most anti-social approaches because the platforms that have introduced "Al" to the public imagination are run by authoritarian extremists with deeply destructive agendas.
And their extremism has had a profound chilling effect within the technology industry. One of the reasons we don't hear about this most popular, moderate view on Al within the tech industry is because people are afraid to say it. Mid-level managers and individual workers who know this is the common-sense view on Al are concerned that simply saying that they think Al is a normal technology like any other, and should be subject to the same critiques and controls, and be viewed with the same skepticism and care, fear for their careers.

This northern area has witnessed relentless bombardment, and remotely controlled robots loaded with explosives are operating in there. They ve been literally wiping out entire neighbourhoods.
What we know is at least four Palestinians have been killed in this attack, and there are also dozens of Palestinians injured.
This shows Israeli forces are attacking people even as they're fleeing following Israel's forced expulsion orders. Because of the intensified bombardment, Palestinians are on the move.
The army is using quadcopters to kill people trying to escape their neighbourhoods and using these robots with residents saying every time they explode it feels like an earthquake.

The word "ghetto" was not the only Holocaust-era import to make its way into nascent Israeli discourse. Shitrit's colleague at the Minorities Ministry, Gad Machnes, went one step further rhetorically. Speaking at a meeting of the ministerial committee in November 1948, he warned his colleagues that "holding Arab residents in fenced-in concentration camps is no longer justified."
Even earlier, in July 1948, Yosef Vashitz, a member of the left-wing Mapam party, offered a chilling admonition: "This concentration is the most important act undertaken regarding the Arabs in the state of Israel. This will determine whether the state of Israel will be a democratic state or a feudal state with medieval customs and Nuremberg Laws."
To be sure, "concentration camps" and
"ghetto" were lurking presences at this time in a society laden with the fresh traumatic weight of the Holocaust. One may have assumed that there would be an absolute taboo on such language in the immediate aftermath of World War II. But this was not the case.

Don’t let anyone tell you opposing arming a genocide + war is radical. To the contrary it’s the only sane position
"Polling shows that Americans overwhelmingly oppose both arming Israel and U.S. military involvement in war with Iran, because nobody wants to foot the bill for endless violence," he continued. "The U.S. must cut off the endless supply of weapons now, before Israel finishes this genocide and launches the world into all-out war. Every representative has a responsibility to take immediate action. The bare minimum is signing on to the Block the Bombs Act led by Rep. Delia Ramirez and legislation opposing war with Iran."
As Abuznaid notes, both positions are broadly popular among the U.S. population. A June
2024 CBS poll found that 61% of Americans oppose sending Israel weapons, while a recent Economist/YouGov poll showed 60% are against the U.S. becoming involved in the war on Iran.

In recent months, the Israeli regime has perpetrated genocide and apartheid in Palestine, a transnational terrorism attack with booby trapped pagers in Lebanon, thousands of armed attacks on Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, & Iran, the unlawful occupation of Palestinian, Lebanese, and Syrian territory, several extrajudicial executions on foreign territory, the assault on and commandeering of the humanitarian flotilla ship the Madleen, countless attacks on United Nations staff and facilities, and the use of its proxies in Western countries to harass human rights defenders and to corrupt

Community, not performance
The "bubble" framing also fundamentally misunderstands what most people want from social media. When you go to a knitting circle, are you disappointed that most people there want to talk about knitting? When you join a book club, do you complain that everyone seems interested in books? Pundits and politicians may want to broadcast to the largest possible audience, but most people are looking for community, not maximum reach.
Most people aren't looking for a debating arena. They want to talk with people they like about topics they care about-whether that's knitting, local politics, or professional interests.
This becomes impossible when the platform owner has hung out a shingle for Nazis, and your attempts to discuss your hobbies get drowned out by fascist propaganda algorithmically pushed into your timeline. That's not
"diverse discourse"-it's just a bad user experience.

Electoral politics in the U.S. has long promised a voice to the people, yet in practice, it consistently fails to engage the public in the decisions that shape their everyday lives.
Voting every few years for candidates pre-approved by party machines and funded by corporate interests offers little more than the illusion of choice. Meanwhile, the economic system that underpins this political structure
-one driven by profit, wealth concentration, and the relentless demands of capitalism— renders it nearly impossible for ordinary people to exert meaningful influence.
Most people are too burdened by debt, housing insecurity, precarious employment, and mass media distraction to organize effectively, let alone navigate the labyrinth of bureaucratic systems designed to disempower them. In this landscape, democracy becomes a hollow ritual while real decisions are made in boardrooms, lobbying offices, and closed-door meetings far removed from public accountability.

When politicians lost their gamble that we would achieve herd immunity to COVID, they didn't admit they were wrong or explain that, without any mitigation, our "new normal" would be continual reinfection with a blood vessel, organ, immune system and brain damaging virus.
Instead, they doubled down and worked to normalize this continual reinfection- and all the
negative downstream outcomes that come along with it, like overwhelmed hospitals, record student and teacher absences, constant illness, record rates of worker sickness and long-term
illness, re-emergence of controlled pathogens, dropping test scores, high excess deaths, and increasing heart attacks and strokes among younger people.

Unlike the other candidates, Zohran Mamdani has not called for hiring more cops. Instead, he is pushing for … more violence interrupter programs and mental health teams that respond to 911 calls instead of police officers. It’s an approach that has set him apart from the other candidates #nycdebate

Not gonna repost the article but then Chait abundance-propaganda in the Atlantic is so stupid + wrong? Like this complaint that parts of the weak-ass 2021 bipartisan infrastructure bill wouldn’t be done until 2027 as compared to Hoover Dam? Uh, Hoover Dam took 8 years (planned 10) 🤔

The kidney was still working well, but appeared to have been rejected because Looney had to reduce her antirejection medication due to an infection, according to the hospital.
"Towana Looney's genetically engineered pig kidney functioned well for over four months, and she was able to enjoy life without dialysis for the first time in nine years," Dr. Robert Montgomery of NYU Langone Health, who performed the operation, said in a statement.
"Towana's willingness to endeavor into the unknown to help solve the nation's organ shortage crisis will impact many more lives after her," Montgomery said. "We celebrate her tremendous courage and sacrifice. She lived with a pig kidney longer than any other human in history, and the field has learned a great deal from her. Her contribution has furthered the hope and promise of genetically engineered pig organs as an alternative source to human organs."

Trump's immigration policies weren't popular in his first term, but not because they were too compassionate for the cold hearts of the American public. It's because Democrats weren't yet conditioned to curl into the fetal position when Trump did and said unconscionable things. He referred to black-majority countries as "shit holes" and it was a big deal, because Democrats at all levels reacted in disgust. When he separated immigrant children from their parents, Democrats didn't call it a "trap" because they worried some of the parents might be gang members. They raised their voices and made a ruckus. Then they beat him in the midterms. Then they beat him in 2020.

Opinion | In Gaza, Almost Every IDE Platoon Keeps a Human Shield, a Sub-army of Palestinian Slaves
Innocent Palestinians are regularly forced by soldiers to enter houses in Gaza to make sure there are no terrorists or explosives. So why is the IDF's Military Police Criminal Investigation Division opening only six investigations into the use of human shields?
