In 2005, the Riga transport plan study predicted a 70-80% growth in car ownership in Riga in the next 20-30 years. The actual growth over 22 years has been... drumroll... 4,6% But population has decreased by 20% :/
The study predicts a 5% decline in Riga population but a 70 to 80% growth in car ownership rates between 2003 and 2030.Current car ownership rates per 1000 inhabitants. 318 in Riga, around 380 to 400 in denser sattelite town areas, around 410 to 450 in more rural suburban areas.

The amazing glow-up of Zemitāni station! This used to be one of the most run-down places in Riga Now – everything is fresh, fully accessible, fully integrated! It took 5 different projects by 2 different stakeholders more or less simultaneously and was probably a pain to manage
Reconstructed viaduct over the station includes a slimmed-down roadway and bi-directional bike paths on both sides. A trolleybus is braking on approach to the bus stop over the platforms, linked to the station via escalators, stairs and lifts. Station building is seen on the right side in the distance. As well as the illuminated letters GRĪZIŅDĀRZS of the adjacent business center.View from the viaduct to the station below. Station building and orange Elron Tallinn-Riga train in the center. Lift to the left. Illuminated business center sign behind the station building.Using the lift to quickly get from the bus stop to the platform level. Orange Elron train departing for Riga. Reconstructed platform with level boarding. Reconstructed catenary with provisions for migration to 25kV AC. Renovated preserved wooden shelters and renovated facade of the 1950s station building.View from the train stopping location on the platform. The (slightly dirty) glass lift shaft on the right side. The historical wooden shelters on the left side.

Latvia's first dedicated public transport traffic signals! Previously only special signals for trams existed, but this summer new changes in the traffic code were made to introduce universal public transport signals. CC: @chittimarco.bsky.social
Trams and buses share a center-running public transport lane. This is controlled by a public transport signal. Cars making left turns are stopped during this phase. A close-up of the signal showing "S" for stop (as red for general traffic).

Excluding cross-border electricity trading (which is quite small). On the left is split by sources. 56% solar, 32.4% hydro, rest is biomass and wind. In total, 97.9% is from renewable sources.Same as previous, but includes cross-border electricity trading. This amounts to 10.1% of electricity.
