I still hate Craig Thomas and Carter Bay for what they did. I know HIMYM had its issues but had they ended the series the way it should have ended, it would have been a really nice series. Instead, they fucked us all.

I also feel guilty though it's not entirely my fault. There were specific reasons their mom and I chose to live in the suburbs as opposed to being more central city located. I hate how freedom = car for them and their friends and kids in general.

When we've taken the kids to Europe they're amazed at how free the kids seem. They have a level of freedom mine don't. And when we go to the beach, for example, they relish being able to walk or bike everywhere.

Now my kids? No clue how to navigate the bus system. Sure the can ride their bikes to friends' homes in the immediate neighborhood but to visit other friends? You're crossing 6 lane roads. They need rides hoke from after school activities so I have to adjust my schedule to match theirs.

And it was also easy to get home from after school activities. Again, starting in middle school, just take the bus. Transfer downtown. Take another bus. Home in an hour. My parents benefited to. Their schedules didn't have to revolve around mine.

Both as a pre-teen and as a pre-driving teenager. Similarly, because these were neighborhood streets, I was riding my bike around the whole of west Louisville at a very young age. Summers were glorious. Leaving the house at 9 am and returning at dinner time.

So growing up, I was one block away from a bus line. Starting at like 12, my parents would let me walk around the corner, take the bus 20 blocks or so downtown, and then either walk the 8-9 blocks to the Main Library or take the downtown trolley. Being able to do so gave me so much autonomy.

Oh, as the parent of two teens, who lives in suburbia but grew up in the city, I have lots of thoughts on this.
