Oil & gasoline higher but not by much. Oil was higher 2 weeks ago and gasoline futures (RBOB) back to August levels. Keys will be: 1. length of tariffs 2. Canada's response 3. Location Midwest drivers could see price hike soon as most Canadian imports go to refineries there

If your light and heat are working from North Carolina to Virginia to Ohio ... thank coal. Coal + nat gas + nuclear are 88% of your power generation mix this morning. It's not pretty and certainly not what we'd think would be the case in 2025, but that's our reality.

What's clear is what we've been reporting on for nearly 4 years: American nat gas saves Europe by keeping the light and the heat on. Europe's natural gas & power prices are exponentially more than the U.S. They would be even higher without American LNG, which continues to flow into Europe every day.

Brian Sullivan @briansully.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
Both sides are taking a financial hit and some countries in Europe are losing energy sources. No one wins. As such, it seems possible (or even plausible) that Ukraine and Russia end up striking some kind of deal to keep the gas flowing. Or not. Time will tell.

US LNG to Europe's rescue, again! As we discussed on Power Lunch today, Ukraine has said "nyet" to Russian gas. This ends (at least for now) a deal to move gas between Russia and parts of Europe that has been in place since 1991.

The group that pushed out al-Assad is labeled a terrorist organization by the U.S. and U.N. so it would be unwise to assume that pushing out one dictator for this group is some type of human rights upgrade.

Unless the thinking comes directly from a few people close to the new rulers of Damascus, anyone who claims to know is just guessing. All we can even fractionally confident of is that 'Syria' as a nation-state is likely over. What comes next and how parts of the world react is critical.

Syrian dictator al-Assad is toppled as rebel troops take Damascus. al-Assad is a bad, bad guy and his exit (likely to Russia but we don't know) is welcome. But it's unclear what happens next for Syria or what the intentions are for the military regime that has "liberated" the city.

My take: the group-led by Saudi-will wait to see what happens with U.S. energy policy & China demand before making any significant moves with oil volumes Oil should stay range bound or go lower assuming no major output interruptions (broader Middle East war, Trump getting tough on Iran, etc)

I'm not saying insurance is a good or bad thing - that's an individual judgement - just simply adding that paying cash is not merely a savings from interest. As I've said in the past, being wealthy means not having to pay for something if you can avoid it and don't feel you need it.

Potentially critical factor for all-cash buyers of homes: no need for insurance. Sure, you can buy all the insurance you want but no one can force you. If you have a mortgage then the bank basically owns the home and forces you to have a certain % of coverage www.washingtonpost.com/business/int...

All-cash buyers are still snapping up homes. See where they’re buying.
Nearly a third of home purchases last year were all cash. See where.
