To write the game recaps, the SIDs enter a game file, and FanWord generates the story.
Alworth confirmed that SIDs can give the Al model requests to get specific angles on stories.
Alworth said the SIDs proofread and doublecheck the stories before publication.
To write feature stories, Alworth said the SIDs send student-athletes a list of questions. The athletes then type or voice-record their answers. FanWord generates a story based on their answers.
"In the time it takes to write one or two features, it could write eight or nine or 10"
Alworth said.
Knowing how Athletics will write feature pieces for ticketed sports, which are arguably the most popular, several Murrow students and professors have said it is not real journalism. Some have said the method lacks the ability to ask follow-up questions.

The announcement WSU Athletics released about the partnership came up as 81% AI-written, including Jon Haarlow's quote, WU's vice president and director of Athletics.
The only part not Al-generated was CEO of FanWord Chris Aumueller's quote.
The Daily Evergreen ran the announcement through Pangram, an Al detector, several times. Pangram claims to achieve a 97.5% detection rate on fully Al-generated text.

There are plenty of after-basketball paths Sophie Cunningham could explore that do not involve further emboldening vile bigots obsessed with driving trans people from public life. so anyway this kills the entire premise of the column. the column was spiked because it could not pass editorial standards it’s not censorship. he left out facts that ran counter to the narrative he wanted to push. it’s very simple stuff

Such attacks are what Tumwater High student Frances Staudt says she endures every day at school. Two Marches ago, Staudt refused to play basketball against a biological male from Shelton for fear of being injured. She added that the biological male's presence in her locker room made her feel uncomfortable.That hasn't spawned much sympathy from certain peers.
"I have people at my school cussing me out. I have people using some pretty awful words toward me as well. I've had people say 'F-You, Frances, and 'I hope you choke and die, Staudt said. "But I know ultimately I'm doing the right thing...this whole thing isn't about hate."
So it's not an anti-trans movement? I asked Staudt.
"There's only so many times that I can say that what we are standing up for is not ant-trans," she said. "This is pro-women's sports."

Fifteen-year-old Thunderbird Frances Staudt was warming up when she noticed a girl on the other team was trans. She later told KOMO that she feared the girl would injure her during the game, and complained. But in Washington, trans girls and boys have played with, and against, cis girls and boys for nearly two decades. The trans girl could play, no matter how much Frances complained. She sat out in protest. So did one of her teammates. They still won, 33-16.
Frances said the situation "put her on the spot in the whole gym." She said she looked over at the trans girl and said, "You are a man." That was her First Amendment right, she later told KOMO.

REDMOND, WA - Today, the US Supreme Court ruled that states have the authority to ban biological males from competing in girls' sports. Becky Pepper-Jackson, a biological male competing in West Virginia girls' sports, elevated the case to the U.S.
Supreme Court due to complaints of unfair barring from competition against girls. Plaintiffs and defendants made their cases in January of this year and SCOTUS ruled today that states have the ability to create laws to keep boys out of girls' sports. This is significant for Washington State as voters will have the chance to vote yes on IL26-638 to protect girls' sports this November.
The 6-3 decision ruled that the specific state restrictions in the case did not violate the Equal Protection Clause or Title IX, and they further argued that biological sex was the permitted delineator for sex-segregated athletics.
Ahnaleigh Wilson, a high school track athlete in East Wenatchee who has been outspoken in defending girls' rights in Washington State, was in Washington, D.C. for the rally to protect girls' sports this January. She weighed in on the case:
"Today's Supreme Court decision is such a big win for female athletes in Washington and across the country. As a female student-athlete who has competed against boys in girls' sports, this issue has been deeply personal to me.
I know the dedication, sacrifice, and countless hours of training that girls like me invest in the sports they love. We deserve the opportunity to compete on a fair and level playing field.
Title IX opened doors for generations of girls to compete, earn scholarships, develop leadership skills, and pursue their dreams. and this decision helps protect those opportunities.

I didn't know if I was going to write something at that point, but after she allegedly got cussed out by a Storm co-owner during the game, I felt like I had to weigh in.
One thing Wilson emphasized to me at the rally was that she wasn't anti-trans. Another student-athlete named Frances Staudt — who said she's endured daily verbal abuse after refusing to play against a biological boy in a basketball game — echoed Wilson's sentiment.

One was a piece questioning whether players for the U.S. Women's Soccer Team were really the victims of discrimination in their equal-pay lawsuit. Another was a more general column on cancel culture in sports. The last, written shortly after George Floyd's death, implored people to listen to state-champion basketball coach Mike Bethea — a black man urging the public not to stereotype cops. The common theme? All of these challenged prevailing newsroom narratives and likely would have triggered the outrage mob.

I have spoken to Homeland Secretary Mullin to discuss the fire situation in Spokane and potential federal support. After Gov. Ferguson requests emergency assistance he will take the official request for FEMA support to President Trump.
On a personal note, I can relate that last year Sec Mullin and I frequently worked out together in the House gym and he is a fan of the Spokane area. I appreciate his care and concern for what our community is experiencing.
