This is a polar bear that lives at the Assiniboine Park Zoo here in Winnipeg. She seems to be staring into the distance as she thinks through a problem.

I’ll be showing it at Studio 6 for First Friday on November 7th.

Thank you! Luckily I’m pretty intuitive with the brush. I’m sure I’d be intimidated if I had to think too much about it. I have struggled to accept the marks that come out in the past but it’s a bit like hearing recordings of your voice, at some point you just accept that this is what your marks are

An installation view of my 4 trailcam paintings up at the Cre8ery right now. These paintings deal with the specificity of places and times that are usually unavailable to painting. #acrylicpainting #painting #contemporarypaintings #art #trailcams #winnipegart #manitobaartists #canadianartists

Four acrylic paintings from trail camera images installed in the Cre8ery gallery and studio.

Different genres of images, like mug shots and instagram selfies confer meaning to their subjects differently and in a way that derives from the images use or function, rather than its contents. In this way images taken with a motion sensitive trail camera confer a unique context on their subjects. Trail cameras, sometimes known as “camera traps” are used to study animal populations in wildlife ecology and also to track game for hunting. These images, easily recognisable by the strip of data along the bottom confer a fascinating layer of ambiguity on what could otherwise be conventional canadian landscape paintings. Do they show research subjects or prey? Typically Canadian landscape painting is also a romanticized pursuit, to have examples of it derived from a genre of photography used for scientific data seems like an ironic way to question that reading.

An original acrylic painting on canvas from an original source photo of a plains bison.

This plains bison seems both emotionally and physically exhausted. It was kind of a hot day when I took the picture, so they were probably just soaking up the heat.

That helps! I used to use oil pastels for a similar reason (mostly speed, and direct contact.)

Do you find that over time what works for you shifts? Like you’re happy with it at some point but then sometime down the road, you just don’t see what you saw anymore?

120

Brian Longfield @brianlongfield.bsky.social · 01/02/2025

Do you rework them such that some portion of the original layer comes through?

100

Brian Longfield @brianlongfield.bsky.social · 01/02/2025

So do you paint something completely new or just rework the original piece?

110

Brian Longfield @brianlongfield.bsky.social · 31/01/2025

So, it seems like it used to be fairly common for artists to paint over older work that hadn’t sold or they were no longer happy with. What do you think, artists of bluesky? Is that still done or do we see that as unprofessional now? #artsky #artquestions #painting #oilpainting #acrylicpainting
