They can well afford it. That the government hasn't moved on this is more to do with incompetence than malice.

Riding bikes is 10X more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities. And that’s just the climate emissions. Doesn’t include the massive public & personal cost difference, the air & noise pollution difference, the massive space difference, etc, etc…Via @theconversation.bsky.social

Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
Active travel can help tackle the climate crisis earlier than electric vehicles – even if you swap the car for a bike for just one trip a day.

The increased transport emissions caused by building the Galway Ring Road will mean that greater emissions cuts will be required in other sectors, but particularly in agriculture. Proponents of the road should be asked how those emissions cuts in agriculture will be achieved.

Brian Leddin @brianleddin.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
It is widely agreed that the transport sector is the most difficult of all to decarbonize due to sprawl and dispersed settlement patterns caused by these kinds of road projects. It isn't the cleverest idea to make that challenge even harder. www.rte.ie/news/2026/04...

€70m for a 27km greenway (€2.6m per km) seems like an awful lot. Then again, a 2km road costing €80m (€40m per km) was opened during the week in Limerick, despite having dubious benefit, but nobody batted an eye. If anything there was a surreal level of fanfare. www.rte.ie/news/munster...

They're reducing the carbon impact of pumping the gas basically. Obviously the gas itself is a much bigger issue, but they're ignoring that.

The idea that journalists, politicians, groups or - you know, women, people of colour, LGBTQ+ people - should "stay on the pitch" doesn't really hold up. Foreign Minister's account has 60k followers - 40 likes, 13k views? Blue ticks straight to the top of the queue with misogyny, bile.

100% Somebody needs to get the ball rolling on an exodus. I proposed it a few times when I was in the Greens but they dragged their heels with many arguing that the party needed to stay on it because the journalists were there. An unjustifiable reason, in my view. At least they're off it now.

Finally, there's a focus on politicians using X / Twitter and it looks like it's becoming less acceptable for them to use the platform. But politicians use it often because they know the journalists are on it. Media needs to look in the mirror. @drivetime.bsky.social

About 1.5km. But looking at it again the railway curves away from the airport so there would only be a marginal benefit in moving the station further up the track, and probably wouldn't be worth it.

I find myself agreeing with Councillor Healy Rae. Integrating the rail, road, and air infra makes a lot of sense. One other thing I'd add is the need for passing loops / double track on sections of the Mallow to Tralee railway to ramp up its capacity. m.independent.ie/regionals/ke...

Those are just the consultation drawings but there's a note that the junction should be designed in accordance with the Cycle Design Manual. So long as that's done I don't see what the issue is.

Thank you! 🙏

Brian Leddin @brianleddin.bsky.social · 20/11/2025
I found the drawings. I'm pretty sure this is the type of junction that the cyclist that was interviewed is not happy with. This design is not appealing to sport cyclists but it is fundamentally safer. It really is disingenuous of the cyclist to characterise this as giving priority to cars.
110
Brian Leddin @brianleddin.bsky.social · 20/11/2025
I haven't seen the design. Can you point me to it?
100
Brian Leddin @brianleddin.bsky.social · 20/11/2025
That is a possibility. I'd have to see the design myself though. The prioritising cars at junctions point is often made by that subset of cyclists I referred to earlier. It is usually misleading and a reason to rubbish a scheme, when in fact it's following Dutch cycle design principles.
200
Brian Leddin @brianleddin.bsky.social · 20/11/2025
There's a subset of cyclists who tend not to want bike lanes. They tend to be faster, sport cyclists, rather than children, elderly, etc and are happy to mix it with vehicles or cycle in a hard shoulder. Bike lanes are for making cycling attractive to people who aren't as confident / skilled as them
110
Brian Leddin @brianleddin.bsky.social · 20/11/2025

All of this means that the LAP might not be worth the paper it's written on. The Office of the Planning Regulator might have something to say about this. Then again, the LAP really didn't properly consider the development potential for the village given a new railway is being built right to it.
