Implementing these “laws” is about as practical as forging a sharp knife which can’t be used to stab people

It was particularly weird the way she said it. As though everyone passed on the family home for the next generation to live in. Maybe she sees it as the logical end point of the boomerang generation

We were talking to someone who works for English Nature today at Gait Barrows in Lancashire. He told us that dormice have been seen there but he has never seen one in the wild himself! Apparently a very shy creature

ABM systems like Patriot do seem quite effective. They have been used widely in Ukraine, Israel and the gulf. And when intercepting conventionally armed missiles, you don’t need to be 100% perfect. Every intercept is a win

One aspect is that it would gradually claw back the tax free cash which can be taken from pension schemes by levying the higher rate on the taxable portion. This is probably less painful than capping the tax free cash -- where even the idea caused ructions a couple of years ago

Brian Probert @brianhprobert.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I wasn't very clear. I meant 25p instead of 20p. Even if the 5% surcharge applied to all rates, a pensioner would need to be on about £250k before it was worth foregoing the SRP

Brian Probert @brianhprobert.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I was just thinking on the basic rate. But since average pensioner income is only about £17k it would only raise about £3 billion

Brian Probert @brianhprobert.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The fairest and simplest way to tax the more affluent pensioners -- although politically impossible -- would be to impose a standard income tax rate of 25p on everyone drawing SRP.

From James Marriott in @thetimes.com "The encounter will remind viewers how much stranger right-wing politics has grown over the past decade. Rees-Mogg was once unsurpassed as a reactionary oddball; Carlson managed to make him seem almost conventional."

More to the point why did the USA fight Japan? They didn't want any territory in the US sphere of influence. They could have accepted an apology for Pearl Harbour and made peace
