U.S. instability drives scholars to Canada

The federal government and Canadian universities have moved quickly to roll out a program of this scale, in part to attract scholars whose research has been threatened by funding instability, policy changes and political interference in the United States following President Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024. Most of the 64 researchers in the first cohort hail from U.S. institutions, an influx touted as a “brain gain” for Canada.

Daniel Kreiss is among them. He will leave the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to join the University of British Columbia as the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada in Democratic Communication.

Dr. Kreiss plans to use the position to conduct comparative research on global patterns of democratic backsliding and translate findings for policymakers and the public.

Don't forget the godfather of lebensraum spending over a year traveling through the twilight of Reconstruction-era US and writing approvingly of indigenous genocide www.jstor.org/stable/10.39...
Ratzel recognized how far the extermination of America’s indigenous populations had progressed by the 1870s. He had visited California in the final years of a genocidal campaign that had decimated the indigenous population. And yet he only rarely expressed any pity for a race, or species, for that matter, that had been eliminated. ...America’s native population, he argued, had not managed to move beyond a huntergatherer society when the first European colonists arrived. The Indians had failed to build towns and cities and exploit natural riches such as iron ore and gold. Their thinking was irrational and superstitious and they were prone to alcohol and gambling addictions. Ultimately, Ratzel came to the conclusion that the extermination of the indigenous Americans was necessary because they had proven inferior in the natural struggle for space. “One is placed in a peculiar position in regard to the displacement and annihilation of a whole race,” he wrote in 1877. “As a sensitive human being, one cannot approve of the means by which this struggle is fought; but as a thinking human being, one cannot avoid feeling satisfied by its outcome.” The only way, he claimed, in which the indigenous Americans might find their place in American society was if they were as “scattered and few” as Europe’s Sinti and Roma. He was quick to add that anyone who had witnessed the Roma in Hungary would surely recognize the “general harmfulness” that these populations exerted within a Volk. “Such entirely different levels of civilization as the Californians and the Indians are even less likely to coexist in the long run; the strong simply washes the weak away.” This, surely, was natural selection at work.

A key Vatican II document rejected by the SSPX is one that, among other things, deplored antisemitism in every form and repudiated the “deicide” charge that blamed Jews as a people for Christ’s death. The Vatican crafted the document repudiating it as the church reckoned with the role traditional Christian teaching had played in the Holocaust.

The SSPX today says it rejects accusations that it ever taught or practiced antisemitism, and the SSPX distanced itself from one of the original 1988 bishops, the late Bishop Richard Williamson, when he denied the Holocaust.

In December, Ganahl praised John Eastman, a controversial conservative figure who was a visiting scholar at CU’s Benson Center, a privately funded entity that promotes conservative views.

“There are fantastic folks who come in,” said Ganahl said on conservative talk radio last year (here at 11:30). “Right now, it’s Dr. John Eastman, who’s riling some folks up.”

What is the use of AI in this project?

ASU Atomic uses AI to interpret your learning goals and assemble personalized, focused modules using ASU's verified content. The AI helps tailor your experience, but everything it produces is built using trusted ASU content.
How can I trust what is generated from AI?

All learning content in ASU Atomic comes from ASU's academic materials and instructors. The AI just organizes and presents that content — it doesn't invent or source information from the open Internet.

Much of the borrowing tied to the OpenAI megacontract was done by projects involving data center developers working with Oracle. The debt was structured as short-term construction loans meant to be syndicated among a group of banks and other institutions. Oracle is the tenant and OpenAI is the subtenant on the deals, but the debt doesn’t sit on Oracle’s balance sheet.

These loans were among the largest-ever deals in project finance, bankers say. About $10 billion in loans were taken out for Crusoe to develop the original OpenAI site in Abilene. Vantage Data Centers is constructing a campus in Shackelford County, Texas, and another in Port Washington, Wis., with $38 billion in borrowed money. A Stack Infrastructure project for a fourth OpenAI facility in Dona Ana County, N.M., raised about $18 billion.

we didn't start the fire
Oracle, though, is in a comparatively weaker financial position than big tech rivals. It has a lower investment-grade credit rating, more debt and is burning cash. Much of its future revenue is tied to a money-losing startup that is facing growing competitive pressure. The cost of protecting Oracle’s bonds against a potential default via credit-default swaps roughly quadrupled between late September and late March, though it has fallen slightly since then.

"We're thinking of doing it as a joint venture. It's a way of securing it - also securing it from lots of other people."

"It's a beautiful thing"
