Did the Crooked Cue write this?

Me in Korea for the first time, seeing all these commie-style tower blocks surrounded by nature and/or farmland:

For me it comes down to the city not being able to get the small things right, so why does council bother with any of the big ideas? I don't think it's impossible either. Seeing the city put the good china out for FIFA means the capability is there.

Of course I agree with Alex but there's no constituency for any of this stuff. A cafe in a park? Absolutely no one in Toronto wants that.

Parks department doesn't want people to use parks. Simple as. Parks is a mess? No, just functioning exactly as intended.

Oh I thought sometimes you don't have to take your laptops out. They'll yell at you either way though. That hasn't changed.

I know the city's going to take advantage and install some permanent public realm improvements with all this construction right? /s

Can the bidirectional cycle track be extended south to Queen St from Armoury since the northbound cycle track there is closed for Ontario Line construction?

The media, and society rightly focuses attention and resources where the most harm is being done.

I think Perks would say that the depopulation of his ward was due to capitalism and therefore not his fault. I think it's curious that he espouses an ideology that allowed him to do nothing!

I think because of Ireland's tourist branding, a lot of people don't realize that the country is like the final boss of anglosphere NIMBYism and car culture warriors.

You might get an odd CEO who wants their staff to be safe, but the bigger whiners are more the private equity guys. They're virtually self-employed and have tons of influence on TRBOT and the PC party.

I do not want to see a “deal” where Chow agrees to remove bike lanes near Crooked Cue in exchange for saving the rest of the network (she will definitely make this deal).

Perhaps everyone who rides should now get in a car. Imagine that protest.

brianbswizzle.bsky.social @brianbswizzle.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Streetcar ops taking over bus ops is basically an apocalypse level event in Toronto. TTC actually went, “what if we took North America's best bus network and made it more like the world's slowest streetcar network?”

It's something I sometimes try to explain to people but it's hard to do that and not sound like a crazy person. It's still true though.

Sorry it's cope. The Bloor bike lanes west of Bathurst and east of Avenue would be very easy to remove. Same with Avenue and Yonge. It'd only take a few days. The permanent sections on Bloor and University I agree will not be removed.

Too much paved surface and not enough "open green space". Wouldn't pass muster in Toronto.

Yeah I was going to blame my bugbear CP24 but the odd times I'm forced to watch it in a waiting room, all the violent crime they report on takes place outside of Toronto.
120
brianbswizzle.bsky.social @brianbswizzle.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
My uneducated guess is that there's just less low level or random violent crime in Toronto because of gentrification. So any gang activity that gets disrupted by the police has an outsized effect on the numbers.
010
brianbswizzle.bsky.social @brianbswizzle.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
It does match dropping crime rates across most North American cities. I think unfortunately the question is still why people perceive Toronto specifically to have higher crime rates than other cities.

Basically, support from local politicians is a fantasy and not a strategy. We have to learn from the Jarvis bike lane removal and it seems that we aren't (yet).

It's a great idea if you want to fight Ford, but there's no indication that City Council wants to fight this. The fact that our progressive Mayor chose not to install the Eglinton bike lanes does not make me hopeful at all.
110
brianbswizzle.bsky.social @brianbswizzle.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Yeah and this goes against current thinking where we have minimum lane widths because we assume Toronto drivers can't negotiate smaller spaces. Basically most of the Old City's road network wouldn't not be legal to build today, and yet somehow we still manage!

brianbswizzle.bsky.social @brianbswizzle.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Yeah, it's a bandaid traffic calming solution like speed bumps. If the city actually had a properly funded intersection daylighting and raised intersection program we could get rid of a lot of stop signs. One can dream.

And they used it just the right amount to scare the feds a bit, but not align too closely to Poilievre who is unpopular and could provoke an unrecoverable urban backlash. They did a really excellent job here just from a strategy viewpoint. They're absolute pros at this stuff.

I do think Canadian farmers are uniquely skilled at this though and this was pretty much inevitable. It's a powerfully lobby and they're able to mobilize media in their favour in a way that other lobby groups could only dream of.

It will be the windmill argument all over again. I'm not getting a cut but I can see it in the distance from my house and it has a “visual impact” to the environment. HSR proponents need to be prepared to fight against arguments like these.

I think this is copium. California is a solid blue state but even there your average Californian is completely unaware that their wine is not legal to sell in most of Canada.
