To clarify: I could ask an LLM the same question. But I like asking people who think about this, because the LLM is just regurgitating, I want to ask someone who actually thinks about this stuff.

I think the question most have right now around RAG is: when to rag, when to MCP?

This was quite a lift, Devon! Congrats and thanks!

Fantastic. You should post on the StyleX websites blog too!

Oh man. I already had to thank Robert on GitHub. But thank you too, Devon, this is going to make a lot of my teams happy. Maybe in a toss my Frankenstein multiselect now.

Seeing you and Naman chatting about Dialogs, I kinda want to wave to @nmn.sh to come over here too, as this is interesting to the work he does with StyleX.

Man, just stoked to see Devon and Naman having an insightful, helpful, and nerdily interesting conversation on this platform is all I want. You two are the best and are the foundation of my design system.

@devongovett.me just to mention over here: I’ll still catch your posts in Twitter by using xcancel. Really looking forward to this one!

It also encourages you to write better sustainable manageable CSS.

StyleX and React Aria are a perfect match for each other. My design system is built with the both of them.

Oh yeah, always watching your repo like a hawk! I haven’t updated to latest yet, so haven’t tried it, but very excited about all the work you’ve been doing lately! Thanks for the reply! And I’m still happy that StyleX was the choice I made. I still haven’t found something I like better.

Sick Devon! Love all of it but the integration of Autocomplete into these other components is fantastic!

Is the plan for the starter kit to get more robust? On thing for sure, if I can learn from this setup and offer something similar to my own design system users (built with RAC), that would be amazing.

BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 13/08/2025
This is super slick — and the other post you made (bsky.app/profile/devo...) looks great too. I’m curious though… for me, RAC is something I build on top of in a design system component library, and it’s UI-less. How do you see folks using these examples in that context?

BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 16/07/2025
Nice. I always get requests to do this on tables in case it is overflowing but the cutoff happens in a way that you can’t tell that there is more. I’ll give this a try, maybe layer in container query width?

🤔 Can I come work for you? That would be the absolute best change of scenery I could possibly think of.

I just happen to be working for a company that is under a venture capitalist structure that demands fast delivery to product, and have those types of pressures put onto a design system.

I want to follow up here: I absolutely believe that StyleX is the best CSS framework out there. What is will save you in the future through its careful and deliberate structure and approach is monumental compared to the time it takes to configure it. Next is dead simple to set up, for example…
100
BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 25/05/2025
But actually most my teams use Next. I’m still poking at it though. My biggest issue is that I am trying to build my company’s design system library using StyleX, but getting pressure from product that it’s not easy enough to set up. It’s unreasonable, I know, but still something I deal with.

I’m happy for any work on StyleX that makes setting up easier. To that point, is there a reason to focus on Vite plugin and not the CLI? The CLI seems like your (albeit temporary?) magic bullet to resolve “installation and setup” woes. I’m in that “set up a Vite template” discussion on GitHub…

BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 26/04/2025
Anyways, thanks again for the library and also for dealing with me on the StyleX GitHub discussion board. Constantly bugging you there and you are very helpful.

BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 26/04/2025
I would agree though, that the only grief I still have to manage from teams using my DS is the implementation and configuration into their applications.
100
BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 26/04/2025
I can easily spout off all the reasons why I made my choice, and how, after using it, I have come to realize how it guides you to use best practices. Additionally, it constantly saves you from dealing with many issues. But you won’t know it because you’re not dealing with them.

I have been using StyleX in my design system for over a year now. I sweated and labored over the choice of what CSS framework I was going to choose for not only my DS, but essentially for any new greenfield work that would be using it to build. Over this year I have become very happy with my choice

On the documentation site for RAC I mean.

When you scroll to the bottom of the search ListBox, when you reach the bottom it auto closes. Just a tiny thing but drives me nuts.

Assuming this isn’t bad news for StyleX? 🤞

May I ask why? Personal or requirement?

The Adam Family Home Computer over here, if you remember that one. Used carriages and tape cassette.

I feel like we’re so close to a multiselect. Which, honestly, I’m expecting because I just finished building one with React Aria Components. But I’m very excited to see how you solve the issue.

It paid nicely too with StyleX’s mental model

🔥 🔥 🔥 And yet so many of us are going to be expected or demanded to implement this because it will satisfy our stakeholders / CEOs who believe if we don’t have one it is a sign of failure to keep up.

Pretty telling. You’d think they’d want to be here. And I’m not talking left right politics, I’m talking about a social media platform free from the controls of a single person.

I am not defending the use of it for terrible stupid dumb dumb idiot MAGA memes. I guess I’m really just trying to bring this conversation back to the original point of the podcast: Congress has lost its sense of self and acquiesced to Trump.

BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
I wish you the best and truly believe you are trying to fight for the right reasons.

BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
But as far as I understand it that is not the case.

BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
It was akin to Orwell’s comparison of people to sheep in Animal Farm. Over the years, countless variations of the meme have existed. If popular culture has redefined its meaning, and most now see it as dehumanizing, then I apologize.
200
BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
That’s why I avoid these platforms; they often become “rage cages,” with people assuming the worst in each other. So, one last time before I step away: The “NPC” meme, in its original form, wasn’t about dehumanizing anyone.
100
BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
I do. Of course I do. And I believe you do too. I believe most everyone does, Assuming otherwise fosters negativity. To address me as if I don’t is to assume the worst of me.

BriGuy @brian-mc.bsky.social · 16/02/2025
Perhaps. You mention it being a slur. And dehumanizing. I am unaware of this specific use of the NPC meme. It’s been around for a long time and has hundreds of variations. Perhaps Ezra is unaware as well? He seems to be referring to it as described in this wiki. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPC_(me...

If you get in a discussion with them it's always the same buzzwords and hackneyed arguments. They're the kind of people who make a show of discomfort when you break the status quo like by breaking the normie barrier to invoke a real discussion. it's like in a [video game] when you accidentally talk to somebody twice and they give you the exact lines word for word once more.

I listened to the whole podcast. I think this is taking something out of context. There’s more in there. Just my 2 cents.

Well I’m gonna park a comment here so I can watch this space and see what people may suggest. You can use the hashtag designsystems, but I find that a bit too noisy with everyone pitching their videos. I know there are good people to follow here, and I should make a list. Will share when I do.
