RIP Tony Rayns. One of my favourite cinema experiences was spending an afternoon @irishfilminstitute.bsky.social in front of Rayns and Tsai Ming-liang for EAFFI 2019 (@eastasiaffirl.bsky.social), as seen in this blurry photo below. Rayns was full of wisdom and warmth, passion and curiosity.

I’m hoping all this goofy Vin Diesel content coming out of Cannes eventually leads to a colourful cameo in a Safdie movie. Perhaps an eccentric bingo hall owner who makes a dishonest living scamming widows? Unlikely, but wd be fun seeing big Vinny go on a run playing kooky parts in auteur pics.

The Rio did not disappoint — Funky-ass lobby with a box tv playing Dumbo on VHS, hip ushers and hipper clientele, a fabulous (and tall) screening room with dimmed exit signs, and gender-neutral toilets. Top marks all round!

I rented BARB WIRE (1996) on YouTube like a good, law-abiding citizen and was fed a horribly cropped version, all stretched out to shit. Tell me, how am I meant to fully appreciate a bald Udo Kier with half his shiny head out of frame??

Nothing infuriates me more than seeing people with their phones out during a movie. But when it’s a bunch of giddy grannies trying to get a snap of the King on the big screen, I let it slide. “Didn’t he have lovely eyelashes.” You’re damn right he did, Eleanor. Damn right!

On paper it’s everything I could want: historical epic about a fundamentalist raver! And while the dancing/chanting set pieces are sublime, the performances great across the board, I felt at a distance for most of the film, unable to get any sense of character as we hurtled through the decades…

“We're not freaked out. We're just two normal, slightly confused people trying to be connected to the whole damn rotten enchilada!” Yes. That pretty much sums it up, all right. To be alive, in love and scared of everything. Sissy knows the suss.

If you’re looking for Sunday matinee viewing, line up ROBIN AND MARIAN (1976). Both a quietly affecting meditation on aging and a fun little meta-textual riff on Connery’s post-Bond star persona — here playing a man rebuilding his sense of self after years of bloody heroics.

Sometimes a shorts programme can be saved by just one film. Today, this was that film. Best use of VR I've seen, and the Q&A which followed was similarly refreshing in its candour and humility. (The language some filmmakers use you’d swear they learned how to talk through writing grant proposals.)

SONG SUNG BLUE really hit my sweet spot. A perfectly pitched underdog biopic that wears its goofy heart on its sleeve, proudly embracing the dizzying feel of TV movie melodramas. And wow, at a daunting 133 mins, it sure goes down easy. 🌩
