for v1.4.0, I am thinking the three big things I want to focus on are: 1. multiple spritesheets 2. better macos performance 3. improved music functions and behavior, like playing multiple tracks at once, fade in/fade out, time-based callbacks, etc. (those are just some ideas)

I was sick for most of July, I caught some kind of daycare bug from one of my kiddos. So I haven't been working on games or Usagi or videos. But I did use that time to play games! I beat the original Resident Evil 4 and really enjoyed that. I'm doing better now and working on Usagi v1.3!

thanks for the support! I do think that aside from the Playdate-specific APIs, there's a lot in the book that would translate quite nicely. I made Usagi right after doing Playdate dev for about a year, so the Playdate API influenced Usagi's.

I know steam doesn't offer this functionality (but itch does), but I find the sliding scale/pay what you can model to be really appealing. for my book on playdate programming which is not free, it's really fascinating to see a lot of purchases are higher than the asking price!

Thanks! That's helpful. Yeah, browsing portfilios makes sense. Is Artstation the place for that or specific pixel art sites like Lospec? This is my first time even browsing/exploring what this could be like so I'm less familiar with artists are posting portfolio work.

Thanks for the tip! That's something I've been wondering/curious about. I think someone having a portfolio is particularly helpful. In terms of scope/style, I am planning a 5 stage shmup, in the style of Cho Ren Sha 68K and CAVE games. Looking for enemy + stage sprites in particular.

Brett Makes Games @brettmakesgames.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Does anyone have any advice/guidance on how to find artists to potentially hire for sprite work? I in particular am looking for someone experienced in making shmup art, which has its own visual needs quite different from other games due to visibility being a top concern.
