Maybe half soccer players? Don't think you can leave Maradona off. Could make a case for both Ronaldos and Zidane, but I think those guys would be well below Bolt (and well ahead of Beckham). But "Most famous" gets you out of sport and into brand too much to keep list integrity. Most transcendent.

Dude, anyone who watched Messi, Ali, or Jordan, or even prime Tiger or Federer knows Spice Boy isn't in their league in terms of achievement and athletic transcendence. I am not disputing he's incredibly popular. This isn't about brand. It's about people who revolutionized sport.

I think, rather than "most famous," the better idea is "most transcendent." There's a level of aesthetics, but any list of most transcendent athletes MUST include Bolt, Jordan, Pele, Messi, Maradona, Ali, maybe CR 7 (or Brazil Ronaldo), maybe Tiger, maybe RFed, maybe Serena. Beckham not close.

4. By taking us all out of the moment
The biggest problem with VAR has nothing to do with any specific intervention. The biggest problem with VAR is how it affects the way we experience the game as a whole, including the parts that don't involve VAR at all. Watching sports is about being in the moment. The entire appeal of spectator sports is that you will get to see exciting things and have strong feelings about them. A player scores a sensational goal. You jump up out of your seat. You scream. You hug someone. You can't feel your face.
The World Cup feels most magical at those times when a billion people are collectively sharing a transportive experience. Maybe some of us are feeling joy and some of us are feeling anguish, but we all know that anguish is part of the deal. Sports promise us intensity, not happiness. At its best, the World Cup joins us in an almost unbelievable intensity; we are all here, in the moment, together. How does VAR affect that magic? I can speak only for myself, but I increasingly find myself holding off, hanging back, not reacting to what should be thrilling moments—or if I do react, it's with one eye on the referee, waiting to see if the thing I'm reacting to will be allowed to stand. Once confirmation comes, the excitement is a bit more muted than it would have been otherwise, a bit less spontaneous. And I hate this! Of course, as an inconsistent idiot, I'll always celebrate when a reversed call benefits my team. On a philosophical level, though? I'd rather be burned by the occasional on-field injustice than spend my whole soccer-watching life glancing over my shoulder to see if an accountant is about to cancel my emotions.

OKD and its contributors were fêted in the Wigleaf Top 50 2026 for “On Your 60th Birthday, Resembling Our Mother, Dead at 61” by Patricia Q. Bidar and “Fireflies” by Rina Olsen. Several pieces also made the longlist— see the full list in our newsletter at okaydonkeymag.beehiiv.com/p/bid-farewe...
This image lists the names of the awardees and longlisted nominees: Patricia Q. Bidar, Rina Olsen, Rachel Lastra, Mackenzie McGee, and Melissa Rudick.

The background of the image is a purple-tinted printed photo that appears to have once been folded (evident by the fold lines). The photo is of the moon, huge in the sky, and a mountainous landscape for the skyline. There is a stretched and highly-contrasted image of Sad Jack on the landscape, and on his back lay a woman with her feet kicked straight up, and she is on the phone as if gossiping. Another Sad Jack balances on the bottom of her feet and holds in his front hooves a green star trophy for an award.

Bad enough we have to suffer through Strong/Holden during USMNT matches. Now it looks like they'll get half the remaining games.

This. X1000. I say this as someone who just attended a youth softball tournament for 8 year olds that lasted a week, with games starting at 830 pm. Also shouted curses from coaches, heated spats with umpires, and parents shouting at other people's children. There is a 10th circle. It's not in Oslo.

I’ve long thought VAR is destroying the game, fyi. I think it’s fascinating - life is inherently imperfect and unfair. It’s so bizarre to me to insist that sports be the one facet of it that’s exempt from human error, etc… To me, it is part of the appeal of it.

PSA: If you hate VAR, watch the Championship. Lots of emotion, a lot less oil money, and a lot of fun, strange teams to root for.

We should not be using instant replay to determine whether or not a runner came off the bag by a micrometer for a microsecond while the tag was applied. We should not be using VAR to find microscopic touches on the ball that negate goals. Especially when the defender arguably plays the ball after.
