I’m jumping into edits on Chamber the Round today and reflecting on how fortunate I am to have found a publisher that gets so excited about my work.

I’m pleading with all ALL school districts to consider how it looks when you use genAI for presentations, flyers, lessons, etc. while telling students it’s not okay for them to use it for shortcuts. Our job is to model and to show them effort matters.

Contrapposto by Dave Eggers is very much in the running for the best book I’ve read this year. “Every day in art should be like running down a hill, arms waving, shrieking.”

New for me in 2026, I had a YA book published. Gritty and mean, sure, but with an introspective look at discovering who you are and what you want to do with that near the end of high school. Also worth noting, this book stages on its own and is eligible for 2026 YA horror awards. Just saying.

ICYMI, Andy McWain was brave enough to spend time in Maylene’s Hollow, and had some generous and humbling things to say about the trip.

THIS MOVIE DOESN'T END THE WAY WE WANT is out today! In 1994, three girls go to the movies to see an obscure film. Only one comes out. 30 years later, the survivor learns the movie isn't done with her yet. Now playing in a bookstore near you 😈📽️ www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/827994...

Hailey Piper in a red dress holding a copy of her book This Movie Doesn't End the Way We Want, cover art by Julia Lloyd, showing a fedora over a suit, but there's no one inside except the light of a projector. Out of the book juts a ticket for Blood-Curse of the Toad Man.

The trees are bristling, as though a current runs through the soil at the base of their trunks. Overhead, the canopy shivers. The wind? You should only be so lucky. That’s when the first feral, sulphur-yellow eye snaps open, wandering the landscape until it settles on you. The Denizens

ICYMI, for reasons I’ll be able to share soon, I’ve been writing in Maylene’s Hollow lately and have a free story about what was happening around town as the world went to hell. If you’ve read the book there’s some connective tissue, if not, there’s still a microdose of dread.(1/2)

I just saw that our opening day speaker for our school district is an AI guy, who will talk to us about not just the "challenges" AI presents for teachers, but the opportunities to use AI and to get students to thrive using AI. Meanwhile, my AI policy I've already printed for parents . . .

Our focus is on analytic thinking, clear communication through writing and speaking, and the ability to focus despite distraction.

Generative AI policy: Your job in this class is to think, and exercise your brain. So, in English . . .

AI in any capacity is detrimental.
AI will hurt your ability to think.
AI will hurt your ability to problem solve.
AI will hurt your ability to create.

AI is a threat to students' cognitive development. Recent studies describe a kind of doom loop of AI dependence, where students increasingly off-load their own thinking onto the technology, causing atrophy of thought, leading to the kind of cognitive decline more commonly associated with aging brains.

Therefore . . .

AI is not to be used in any capacity in this class. It should not be used in any point of your writing from notes, to brainstorming, to drafting, to revising. Any use of AI will be considered plagiarism, and cheating. I have no interest in what AI “thinks.” My only interest is in helping you to be better thinkers, and problem solvers.

Also, most written assignments will have an oral component, most often a conversation with the teacher in small groups or one-on-one, to determine level of understanding.
