mechwarrior 2, maybe? I was a literal toddler, my dad would hold me on his lap and I could "play" with that sidewinder joystick running around the desert but later it was the first game I remember that had like, lore and the in-universe themed instruction manual was supremely cool

some goldsmithing photos we melted in some heirloom gold from her grandma(s), so that's also special; part of her ring is literally made of other family rings it was a really cool experience, you get to customize everything to your exact details, and everyone gushes when you say you made them
gold ring melting / annealing - you have to heat up metals after they've been cold worked to add back ductility so they don't crack. so the process (like blacksmithing) is heat, work, heat, work, etc

fujifilm xpro3 35mmmelting gold from the crucible into the strip molds. the molds are flat strips and then you bent them into a ring second (see other photo)

fujifilm xpro3 35mmannealing after the joint gets soldered together. you curl the strip into the ring shape and then weld the ends into a band

fujifilm xpro3 35mmthis is what the flat ring strip looks like - you add the hammered surface finish first while it's flat, and then roll it into size and cylinder second

child labour was bad, of course, but reading a history wherein teenagers constantly invent things and modernize the world sure does feel like we underestimate and underutilize our own
...up stones. As a teenager he was shipped off to work for his eldest brother who ran a tack factory-and Blanchard had found his milieu. His first job was hand-fixing heads on tacks, which he hated, so he invented a tack-making machine that turned out five hundred tacks a minute. After winning a patent for the tack machine, Blanchard sold the licensing rights for $5,000-а stupendous sum for a young man-and opened his own...

you know, when you're a shy teenager who worked at a bookstore, taught yourself land surveying, end up stumbling into building and operating a small town of men in the middle of the forest that is named after you, that you then defend from a crew of hired thugs. just teenager things
lasted well into old age. Nineteenth-century tanners cured animal skins by soaking them in tannic acid derived from a mash of tree bark. It was dirty, dangerous work, requiring vast amounts of timber and water, and was usually conducted deep in the woods. Pratt hired Gould to survey a tanning site, but was sufficiently impressed that he made him a partner and manager of the projected new tannery. So the pint-sized Gould, barely out of his teens, led fifty workmen into the woods and built virtually a full......scale town, including living and food service quarters, a mule-powered bark crushing plant and curing vat facilities, plus a post office, a wagon house, a water race, and eventually a general store. Work proceeded so fast that the settlement was named "Gouldsborough" by acclamation....discussions broke down, one of his backers, Charles Lee, hired a crew of toughs and took over the tannery by force. Gould hastened to the town and addressed a spontaneous gathering of about two hundred townspeople and employees, who rallied to his banner. That night he led a group of fifty men, divided into two assault teams, and stormed the tannery from the front and rear. There was a brief, but wild, shooting melee before Lee's ruffians fled.

yeah, I have big steel toolboxes (even at $500, for the volume that's maybe comparable, and you get nice drawer slides) my small parts storage are these little modules, which are nice enough if less truly contained / customizable I bought the above kickstarter, so I'm curious to try 'em

we can admire the preposterous amount of work and testing that seemingly went into the development of this, and it's cool that you can buy all the STLs for $15 ...but also each module is $20-50 worth of filament and at that point you might as well just buy actual drawers? ABS, IP65 rated, etc etc

to be fair, phone chips always score well on single core because they don't have very many cores? desktop chips are designed to have slower cores * more of 'em, so the overall multicore performance is still ahead on net
