Subjective. That means guessing. Dr. Carroll is very well read in philosophy, but it’s hard to believe that a scientist of his level would accept “subjective” as a test.

And how do we test for that?

Is there a definition of consciousness? Do we even know at what level we can say, “this (x) is conscious.”?

But if you say something, whether wise or stupid, you are responsible. You may accept or retract it. If an AI version of you does the same, it’s not yours, either the wisdom or the foolishness. Personally, I would not like that.

I saw what Farage was wearing, and I’m sure the police did warn him against appearing. The Fashion Police. Because that was a crime.

I keep hearing pundits talking approvingly about wealth creators. For whom are they creating wealth? Where are they getting it, and where does it go? Because I’ve never seen it.

I’m pretty sure this won’t help, but I’m a man, and my favourite writers are primarily women: you, T. Kingfisher, Eva St. John, Elizabeth Hunter, Jodi Taylor, Kim Watt… Oh, sure, I like male authors, too, but except for ones like Tom Holt (K J Parker), they tend to be too chest beating.

Bombshell Uncovered: Evidence Shows Blanche Likely Committed Witness Bribery, Evidence Tampering, and Conspiracy in New Mexico. Those Crimes Carry at Least Seven and a Half Years in State Prison.
Sufficient evidence rests in the public record, and opening a criminal investigation requires far less than proof beyond a reasonable doubt. This all rests on the New Mexico Attorney General.

My first wife was Italian. From Northern Italy. When I told her about the time the Pope fled to Avignon, and there were two Popes, she flat out denied it. Never happened.

My cat used to wake me with a gentle pat on the nose. If I didn’t get up and feed him soon enough, the gentle pat developed claws. Then he’d lick my chin. Unshaven chin, raspy tongue. I’d hide under the covers

And yet, not a single critic who bashed Supergirl recognised that it was a classic illustration of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey. Tropes, indeed. BTW, I enjoyed the film.

I can’t believe that critics these days haven’t read Campbell, and reviewed it so shallowly.

I have just watched Supergirl. It’s a classic Joseph Campbell Hero’s Journey. I’ve rarely seen a film constructed and acted this way, going through nearly all the stages of the journey. The quest, reluctantly accepted; the Companion; the nadir; the redemption arc; even the helpful monster.

I saw an ad for something like that today. It wasn’t a very good seal, it looked flimsy, and the top was open. There may be better ones. There are those wall units that don’t vent outside, but they’re not very efficient.

We are going to have to come up with some sort of solution. Up until now, cold and damp were the problems to be solved. More and more, it’s going to be heat. And we can’t retrofit millions of homes, any more than Louisiana, for example, could suddenly adapt to freezing temperatures for months.

Honestly, I see what you’re saying, but if the whole window swings open to the left or right, or is hinged at the top, it’s hard to seal. Not a sash window, slide up and down thing.

I only did that once, in the late ‘70s. Carried one of those old window monsters up to my 4th floor Village walk up

Nah, just not as simple as USians think. New builds and public buildings are easier. There are some good passive cooling solutions for new builds, but most builders take the easy way.

They do sell wall units here, though, which work okay, but as I look around the house, I wouldn’t know where to install one.

Also, if the window is open to put the exhaust out, the hot air is coming in. A US window unit is sealed by the sash window on top and bottom and by accordion pleats on the side.

I remember, in the early ‘90s, there was a heat wave. My workplace hired a big unit. They placed it about 12’ from the window, and ran the exhaust hose across the floor and out the window. I had to tell them than any heat extracted by the unit was being returned to the room by the hose.

Sash windows. Standard in the USA, but rarer over here. Hard to stick an A/C unit in a window that swings out or up

Michelle and I loved reading to this bright group of kids today! We hope this new Chicago Public Library branch at the Obama Presidential Center will be a place where folks come to read, check out books, and connect with one another for years to come.

The second worst part about the US bringing back firing squads is that they are telling some people to murder others. The worst part is that there will be volunteers. This is over and above how wrong the death penalty is.
