May we, like Fredegar Bolger, ‘decide what to do with the time that is given us’. May we find ‘deeds within our measure’ whenever life asks it of us and—more importantly—have the courage to act upon them. #tolkien #lordoftherings manymeetings.substack.com/p/the-courag...

The Hobbit taught us that Dragons who hoard gold at the expense of the well being of others will have their undoing by even the smallest person. We're meant for more in this world, for good food, cheer, and a comfortable life.

I think it was the porosity of the platform. In the best and worst ways everyone (no matter how large or small your following) was susceptible to being called out or highlighted by the community. Everything is interconnected there and that affects how you show up on the app.

I’m not defending or excusing any American being harmful ever. But I wouldn’t cheer at the loss of an entire country’s voice because countries aren’t a monolith. Saying, “…there might be a little bit more intelligent content, so just a plus that it's gonna be banned in the US.” is gross.

110

breabird.bsky.social @breabird.bsky.social · 17/01/2025

Posting about what they might gain at someone else’s loss and framing it as a “silver-lining” is insensitive. “Silver-lining is meant to be for the person who is experiencing the negative event. Losing income, advocacy, and free speech isn’t a silver lining for other people who aren’t losing that.

010

breabird.bsky.social @breabird.bsky.social · 17/01/2025

I understand your example and sympathize with it. And I don’t think it’s equivalent to what I’m talking about here. TikTok is a massive part of people’s livelihood and advocacy and celebrating anyone losing that is weird to me.

130

breabird.bsky.social @breabird.bsky.social · 17/01/2025

I’m not here to defend Americans and our vastly harmful actions. And at the same time, treating people like a monolith and saying “they all need to go” isn’t the right approach either. It’s more complicated than that.

110

breabird.bsky.social @breabird.bsky.social · 17/01/2025

I want everyone from everywhere to have a chance to succeed. I can’t imagine being excited that any people from any country were losing access to their freedom of expression and income because it might benefit me. Just seems weird.
