The trusty old Nikon D90 has taken its last photo. It served me well for 17 years but today the shutter broke. I learned a lot with this camera (how to be fast to shoot action sports and how to take my time to line up a landscape). It also took a lot of important family pictures over the years.

Title: Slaughter I wrote this in the lead up to the Iraq war. I dream of a day when it is no longer relevant.
Butchers govern this country,
Slaughtering millions,
Bombs dice up innocence,
Ripping apart lives,
Using the flag as a sheet to cover up the dead,
Hiding the horrors of torn up lives,
Lives that this country ground up,
To serve to the ever hungry elite,

They drink a rich wine as red as blood,
A toast to a quick buck,
Stained in the blood of neo-slaves,
Becoming fat off of their flesh,
Laughing drunkenly at the shouts of protesters outside,
As they dine on pork chops,
But isn’t it cannibalism for a pig to eat a pig?
They finish their gluttonous feast,
Using shards of human bone,
Crushed from sweat shop machines,
To pick their teeth,
They move on,
Leaving the table in ruins and penniless,
But they have not had their fill,
They crush another restaurant,
And another,
And another,
Never able to satisfy their blood lust for money,
When will this lust end?
It will not end,
Robberbarrons will just get fatter,
Unless we stop them,
We must stop them,
Before they drain us of our flesh and blood.

Fascists always need a scapegoat to justify their continued existence. Don't ever fall for it.
IN GERMANY THEY FIRST CAME FOR THE COMMUNISTS AND I DIDN'T SPEAK UP BECAUSE I WASN'T A COMMUNIST. THEN THEY CAME FOR THE JEWS, AND I DIDN'T SPEAK UP BECAUSE I WASN'T A JEW. THEN THEY CAME FOR THE TRADE UNIONISTS, AND I DIDN'T SPEAK UP BECAUSE I WASN'T A TRADE UNIONIST. THEN THEY CAME FOR THE CATHOLICS, AND I DIDN'T SPEAK UP BECAUSE I WAS A PROTESTANT. THEN THEY CAME FOR ME-AND BY THAT TIME NO ONE WAS LEFT TO SPEAK UP.

-PASTOR MARTIN NIEMOLLER

Prior to and throughout World War II, Hitler's Nazi party developed a classification system to identify those people the Nazis regarded as undesirable. Citizens and concentration camp prisoners were labeled with triangles according to religion, sexual preference, ideology and numerous other distinctions.

These symbols included:

Yellow on Yollow (Star of David): Jews
Brown: Gypsies
Purple: Jehovah Witnesses
Black: Vagrants and Lesbians
Blue: Emigres
Pink: Homosexuals
Green: Habitual Criminals
Red: Political Prisoners - Communists, Socialists

Sacred Space

Life at Manzanar was uncertain, but the prospect of dying behind barbed wire, far from home, may have been unthinkable. On May 16, 1942, Matsunosuke Murakami, 62, became the first of 150 men, women, and children to die in camp. He and 14 others, most infants and older men without families, were laid to rest in this cemetery outside the barbed wire fence in an old peach orchard from Manzanar's farming era. Here, in the shadow of majestic Mt. Williamson, their somber funerals and memorials were attended by hundreds of mourners.

While some deceased were sent to hometown cemeteries, most were cremated and their ashes held in camp until their families left Manzanar. Giichi Matsumura, an internee who died in 1945 while exploring the Sierra, is buried high in the mountains above you.

Today, only six graves here, including Matsunosuke Murakami's, contain remains; families requested the removal of others after the war.

I REI TO

The Japanese Kanji characters read Soul Consoling Tower." Master stonemason Ryozo Kado, a Catholic. and Buddhist minister Shinjo Nagatomi designed this iconic monument as a permanent tribute to Manzanar's dead, Kado built the obelisk with the assistance of Block 9 residents and a young Buddhists group, funded by 15-cent donations from each family in camp. Rev Nagatomi carefully inscribed the monument's characters-including "Erected by the Manzanar Japanese, August 1943" on the west side.

While Rev. Nagatomi and Ryozo Kado live on in the memories of family and community, Kado also left his legacy in cement and stone. He built the sentry posts at the camp entrance and other camp features in his distinctive faux wood style. Compare the posts surrounding this monument to those near the sentry posts and look for other examples of Kado's craftsmanship around Manzanar. The Manzanar cemetery soul consoling tower monument with the snow capped Sierra mountains in the background.

They were incarcerated for no other reason than because they shared the same ethnicity as those who attacked Pearl Harbor. Entire families were removed from their homes and businesses, forced to live here even as many of their sons fought and died for the United Sates.

HURRY UP AND WAIT

For most hurry up and wait described daily life at Manzanar. "The food, I can't remember if it was good or bad," recalled Kathi Yamazaki, who was three years old when she arrived at Manzanar. "I just remember that we all had to go when the bell rang."

As hundreds of Japanese Americans arrived each day during Spring 1942, many of Manzanar's barracks and mess halls were still under construction. Completed kitchens served up to 800 people a day, in multiple shifts lasting until midnight. By the time the WRA assumed control of the center from the Army in june, mess hall operations were in full wing.A view of the inside of the women's latrine. A reminder of a dark mark on our history from the last time the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 was invoked. Manzanar is one of ten American concentration camps where over 110,000 Japanese American men, women and children were unjustly incarcerated during World War II from December 1942 to 1945.
A recreation of one of the many guard towers that surrounded Manzanar concentration camp. The snowcapped Sierra mountains can be seen in the distance.

They were told they were being held there for their own safety, but the guns and spotlights were facing inward. Twice Orphaned

Here in an old pear orchard, 101 American-born children ranging from newborns to 18 year olds lived in the Children's Village, the only orphanage in a war relocation center. Living in three specially built barracks and nurtured by a dedicated internee staff and others, they became a unique wartime family. Nearly half had been brought from West Coast institutions and foster homes. Others were temporarily separated from families when their parents were arrested or became ill or were infants born to unmarried mothers.

Children's Village was landscaped with lawns, flowers, and cherry trees. Internees built playground equipment and furniture and collected money for toys and other items, while some Owens Valley neighbors brought freshly baked cookies and clothing. The children made friends through camp schools, churches, clubs, and sports and even formed their own baseball team. "But however much we encouraged our children to participate in the life of the larger community, we remained separate from it," recalled Lillian Matsumoto.

What Became of the Children?

After the war many children were placed in institutions and foster homes, while others reunited with their families. With blond hair and blue eyes, eight-year old Dennis Tojo stood out as one of a number of children of mixed ancestry. Adopted in 1943 by the Bambauer family in Bishop, he was the only Manzanar internee living in the Owens Valley after the war. Fifty years later, Dennis and dozens of others from the Children's Village gathered for an emotional reunion, renewing the ties they formed here.

"On June 23, 1942, we departed for Manzanar with 62 children on the long trip we sang songs... A little four-year-old girl stood up and began to sing God Bless America. At the front of the bus, the young soldier holding has rifle with the bayonet listened and I could see tears flowing down his cheek."

-Liman Matsumoto, Children's Vill Assistant Superintendent
